Broncos and Easts Carina support local league kids

The Brisbane Broncos have joined forces with the Carina Leagues Club to foster the further development of Rugby League in the eastern suburbs of Brisbane.

Broncos Managing Director, Bruno Cullen, today announced that Paul Green, who played for the Broncos this season, had been appointed to head up the development program in the district surrounding the suburb of Carina. The Carina Leagues Club has agreed to be a major contributor to this long-term project, which will operate in association with the Easts Carina Junior Rugby League Club.

The program has a simplistic goal - to have more children in the district playing rugby league. Paul Green will assist in the co-ordination of new competitions in schools and will also facilitate specialist coaching at both schools and in junior clubs. Members of the Broncos Development team and Broncos players will be made available to support Green in his new appointment.

The sponsorship from Carina Leagues Club will also help defray some of the costs associated with children playing in well-organised and well-structured rugby league competitions, covering payments for referees, providing transport and providing qualified sports medicine personnel.

President of Carina Leagues Club, Wade Core, said his club had supported the development program because it believed rugby league in the eastern suburbs of Brisbane needed an injection of professionalism.

“Obviously we are vitally interested in the continued growth and success of our juniors at Carina, but we also see the need for a much more structured approach to the development of the game,” he said.

“The boys - and their parents - need to see a definite path for their progress, and the development of our game, and our association with the Broncos, brings with it the strongest possible message that we are endeavouring to cover all bases.

“We want young players to come and join Easts Carina, to play here and stay here throughout their junior careers. Through this program that we are launching with Paul and in partnership with the Broncos, we are keen to stress the type of loyalty that so many players have given to the Broncos in the short history of the club.

“We have a culture here at Easts Carina of which we are proud, but we are well aware that we can build on that. And I don’t know of a better model to follow than the Brisbane Broncos?”

In announcing the program, Mr Cullen congratulated the board of the Carina Leagues Club on their submission of the scheme to the Broncos.

“There is no quick fix to making our game strong at the junior level, and keeping it strong,” he said.
“We need to have plans in place and work to a structure, and this is exactly what the people at Easts Carina have developed. The club also has a record of success, which obviously they want to continue.

“They are very fortunate to have someone like Paul Green to take their plan to the community. And we are very pleased that Paul will continue to work in rugby league, and continue with the Broncos in some capacity. We see him as a great role model and someone who works very well with young people”.

In the past two years the Broncos have launched similar schemes at Greenbank and Aspley, with sponsorship provided by Greenbank RSL Club and Aspley Leagues Club respectively. Former champion Broncos players Michael Hancock and Andrew Gee are employed as development/coaching officers under these schemes.
