Broncos clinch 30-year lease

THE Brisbane Broncos rugby league team are set to play at Suncorp Stadium until 2034 under a new leasing agreement with the State Government and its Major Sports Facilities Authority.

Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Sport Terry Mackenroth said yesterday the Broncos, who moved across from ANZ Stadium through last year, had officially become Suncorp Stadium's anchor tenant.

The long-awaited agreement was made public last night at the Broncos' season launch at Suncorp Stadium, which was the club's first home ground.

It was known as Lang Park before a $268 million redevelopment.

Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen said he believed both sides were happy with the outcome of negotiations.

"We were happy to finally come to an agreement, particularly the financial side which we needed to reassess after the eight games last year to know what it all meant," Mr Cullen said.

He said Suncorp Stadium was in marvellous condition and he was confident the Broncos would quickly settle into their home ground.

The commercial terms of the agreement are confidential but allow for regular review periods so future club officials and governments can re-examine the direction of the club and the stadium.

But the move from ANZ Stadium has not been easy for the Broncos, with the club now facing a multimillion dollar settlement in a contract dispute.

It is understood the club had contracted caterers for their games at ANZ Stadium and had to break the contract because Suncorp Stadium has its own caterers.
