Lockyer Origin doubts
By Barry Dick and Ben Dorries
June 1, 2004
THE Broncos may keep Test and Queensland State of Origin skipper Darren Lockyer in cotton wool for another week, casting doubt on his availability for State of Origin II.
And stand-in Maroons captain Shane Webcke has been urged to rest his injured ribs for another week rather than rush back for the Broncos against Cronulla at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
Lockyer has not played since May 2 when he "popped" his ribs in the warm-up to the Broncos' narrow loss to the Bulldogs but has been training brilliantly, without contact work, for three weeks.
He will need a doctor's clearance this week before lining up against the Sharks and the Broncos' medicos traditionally have been cautious in their approach to rib injuries.
Broncos captain Gorden Tallis yesterday advised Webcke to put his feet up and have a week off rather than risk long-term damage to a rib injury he sustained in Origin I.
Tallis said it took about three weeks to recover from rib cartilage injuries and it would be unwise for Webcke to play before it had healed properly.
"I wouldn't think he's a chance of playing this week but Shane Webcke's a different sort of human to all of us," Tallis said.
"If he runs out don't be surprised, but if I were him I wouldn't be playing."
Webcke and the rest of the Broncos' Origin contingent were given a leave pass from training yesterday and won't train until tomorrow.
Origin regular Shaun Berrigan (hamstring) ran strongly yesterday and is expected to return against the Sharks after a month on the sidelines.
Tallis has been battling a neck muscle injury to be fit for Sunday's clash but said he was almost certain to play if the injury kept responding to daily treatment.
