How was he axed?: Four things learned from Broncos’ sixth-straight defeat

From the moment Jaydn Su’A took his first touch on Saturday night, he appeared to be sending a message to Maroons coach Billy Slater: he never should have felt the axe.
The Queensland back rower was omitted from the State of Origin decider, the one forward not given the chance to avenge the Melbourne capitulation in game two.
While Slater alluded to some niggling injury issues when dropping the Su’A bombshell upon his team announcement, the 26-year-old showed no signs of any concerns as he inspired his Dragons to a 30-26 triumph of the Broncos.

Su’A was on a mission at Suncorp Stadium, heading into halftime having already churned up 108 running metres and eight tackle busts, to go along with a try which came off palpable kick chase pressure to force a Tristan Sailor mistake.

He was kept quiet comparatively coming out of the break, as the Broncos regained some late momentum to score four of the last five tries, but finished with 164 metres and 28 tackles in a telling reminder of why he was parachuted into the Maroons fold to begin with.
Dragons captain Jack De Belin said Su’A showed no signs of bitterness throughout the week, following his Queensland axing, and remained solely focused on delivering the Red V a top eight berth.
“He was just the same old Jaydn Su’A as per usual, he just turned up to training, did his job and he had a good performance,” De Belin said.
“That says a lot to the character of Jaydn, it’s obviously really tough not being able to play Origin - especially the decider up here - but he’s come back to the club with a perfect attitude and put out a great performance tonight.

“He’s been one of our best all year, so full credit to him.

Yeah, great inspiring effort by Jaydn. A big reason that helped us beat the Broncs last night.

It was top of the list of their tip sheet for Broncos player.
+ Harass Sloan and do it over the top. From the Sloan's very first hitup up Rikki and Stags lifted him and drove him back. Billy Walters took his Dad's tip sheet to heart. It was extremely obvious that Sloan was to be bustled out of the game both in attack and defence.
Sloan handled most of the night well. It was just the power is hard for him to handle ..... Right now. That will change in 2025. The beautiful thing is that with Flanno helping him improve his game, he is in good hands. The thing Flanno can fix better than most is toughness, strength, power, stamina and resilience.
He has already done this to the whole squad. Baby steps. Watch this space with Sloan. Broncos identified that Sloan was the key for us and gave him a night of pressure and bustle. He was given EXTRA attention every time he got the ball.

Easy 1 on 1s, FFS.
Katoni Stags is probably the most powerful runner of the ball in the NRL. Easy from behind your keyboard. Be patient FFS.

Watch the Billy Walters try again. There is a Saints player on the ground (Debellin after stopping a try) who impedes Eisunhuth. The player that misses is FMolo. The goal posts impede Sloan getting a good grab on Walters. To blame Sloan for this try is just people looking for bullshit reasons to rubbish his game.

Did you notice Sailor had the same problem with Tuipoloti, Sua. These are not easy 1 on 1s. Especially with slightly built fullbacks

Congratulations to the team beating Broncs. Sloan was targeted all night mentally and physically.

First half:

Usually Rawa's corner is bombed. But Broncs went after Sloan and bombed him. Sloan seems better now under high ball and doers not let ball bounce
They also tried dirty tactics on Sloan like pushing and shoving him. Even after Broncs first try, they pushed him twice but Sloan just walked away. But it showed targeting Sloan was premeditated. It was all within the rules though. Sloan has to learn the art of milking penalty.

Second half:

Sloan was targeted second half again. But this time he was isolated in attack one on one. He was stood multiple times and showed his defensive deficiencies. Couple of them resulted in Broncs tries.

More teams will note this. Sloan has to be protected closer to the line by our edge forwards and work harder in his defence.

Fox interviewed Jayden on ground after the game and asked him how he felt about being dropped from the Qld team for Origin.
His answer was after his initial "sook" he got over it and wanted to play well for his team. He was also climbing over seats to see fans and share photos. Seems like a top class fella and I'm very glad he resigned with us.

He’s 50 games in FFS
There are no excuses for poor tackling technique especially easy 1 on 1’s
Agree and he is suppose to be an attacking weapon for us , but doesn't seem to be doing enough there either ......... Maybe a slow starter but when I watch other rookie fullbacks that have had only a handful of games their attack and defence is on par or better than Sloan .......

The 6 again rule is still the worst to be implemented,it gave the Donkeys a massive comeback, so too Sloans defending, terrible.
If the Dragons were to make a GF and Sloan was FB, I would be Shivering throughout the whole game.
No need to shiver because we want be in the Grand Final 😭

The amount of pressure the Broncs placed on Sloan in last night's game was EPIC. Even Ginnane commented on it during the game. Even when he was supporting a break, the Broncs defenders made sure he couldn't get to a good position to support line breaks. It was so obvious, the intense scrutiny Sloan had on him. It is amazing he played an okayish game.

Besides the obvious result it was great when the full time whistle blew and I didn't have to listen to Alexander anymore...seriously that bloke has real issues with the Dragons....he just doesn't want to give us anything.....tbh hes a real pain in the arse....I reckon when he was a young kid growing up he would have left a circus to join an orphanage
Alexander hasn't forgiven the Dragons for dropping his brother in law (Cameron King). When King was playing for us, Brandy was one of our cheerleaders. As soon as King was let go he went and bought Dragons voodoo dolls and has been putting pins in them ever since. It is a shame because in an unbiased call, he is one of the more knowledgeable callers
