Broncos win Brisbane TV battle with AFL

In the only instance where the Broncos are likely to be challenged by the Lions up in Brisbane on TV, the boys from Red Hill have won the battle.

The replayed Broncos v Roosters game had 50,000 more viewers than the live and heavily promoted Lions v Collingwood bore fest. According to 4BC's Greg Carey, they were 50,000 in front in both the average and peak audiences.

Last year all we heard was crowing AFL fans up north regarding the Lions v Coll game defeating the Good Friday Broncos game. In reality, they only beat the Broncos' peak figure, while the league had the higher average. But of course the media preferred to focus on the PEAK for the sake of the story and the good old AFL.

This year the media has been very quiet about the results of this year's battle, mainly because the Broncos took the Lions down on all counts.

Of course both games were on different nights, but that didn't stop the media billing it as a "battle for the remote controls of Brisbane."

The Lions failed to come even close to the Broncos for the remainder of 2003 and methinks that will be the case again this year.

And as for games not involving the Lions in Brisbane, the test pattern does better.

Brisbane still is a rugby league town.

Not surprising at all, but I'm still happy about it. You'll find that the ABC QLD Cup televised match on sat arvos usually rates better than any non-lion afl matches shown in these parts of the country. As soon as ftizroy, I mean the bears, I mean... the Lions... stop winning premierships, you watch everyone jump off the bandwagon. I mean - just look how quickly people stopped talking about yawnion!

It's not much of a comparison because wouldn't there have been 50 000 at the Lions game anyway?

No suprise at all ......... The Lions mean shit all to the people of QLD and Brisbane
they only appeal to the Victorian Immigrantts up there.

Take away their little AFL salary cap handout and they won't win which results in ZERO attention. The AFL can try and buy support but it'll never take off up there.

AFL is such an inferior sport, why would the people Brissy want to degrade themselves.

No suprises there. Good old Broncos. The Lions are going to hit the ground with a thud once they lose form. Their fans are already drunk on success. It was a fantastic game as well. (Roosters v Brisbane)

I've looked through the Courier Mail all this week and there's been no mention of the Broncos v Lions TV results. This time last year, the Lions' win in PEAK audience, got front page as soon as the results were released. Headlines such as "Lions take TV battle"

These results were out ages ago.

I guess people are used to the Broncos smashing Fitzroy on the box, so it's no big deal.

Yesterday I was looking for a Rabbitohs v Parramatta match report. On Tuesday and there wasn't one. But there was stacks of AFL. Even an article detailing their Easter Monday clash. And alot of articles regarding the Lions match from last Thursday.

Yeah I noticed that. They had a big picture and write up of the Monday AFL game, while the Souths Parra game hardly got a start.

That is an absolute disgrace when you consider the TV ratings figures for non-broncos games compared to non-Lions games which barely rate at all.

There is far more interest for league in general compared to AFL. The Courier Mail is top-heavy with Broncos news and very slack with anything else to do with league.

Strange that isn't it, when News Limited has such interests in rugby league... It is like the Canberra Times sports department. it got taken over by a sports editor that is based in Union. I wonder who the sports editor is for the CM?

Why oztam? Why not AC Neilson? Is that because oztam only does the majoy cities and AC does rural aswell so the margins will be closer. Cause we all know rural QLD is League country.

If you look in today's 'the guide' in the CM it has Friday night football (Broncs v Roosters) at number 4 in top 10. The AFL was listed at 7. So a victory for the Broncos!!

Did you notice how Channel 9 stretched the NRL game on Friday night. It was programmed to start at 8.30 pm. The first try was scored in the 6th minute of play but it was 9 pm when shown on the replay. Methinks Channel 9 need a rocket up them.

On the point abou union journalist, it is obvious that they dominate the sports pages of just about all the NSW & Queensland papers. Mark Oberhardt is always pushing the union bandwagon in the Courier-mail. Mike Coleman goes gaa-gaa over everthing to do with union. Remember him he was the one who put the boot into the RLWC while not say boo about the failings of the union WC. eg world audience of 3 billion for the final instead of 22 million, Namibia population 95% black & a union team 100% white, the thrashing in RUWC were a joyous rugby celebration & in league WC where a national disgrace.

I need not say anything about Fitzsimon & co at the SMH.

But Russ...have you noticed that all sports seem to get a decent go up here in Brisbane. Imagine living in Melbourne where RL doesn't even get a mention in the papers.

I love the Monday and Friday issues of the Courier Mail just because of the coverage of all sports as well as the 3 big codes.

Maybe the reason that AFL gets better coverage in the papers is because they have better coverage all round. 3 games a weekend (including 2 live games)..every weekend.

And you are right Russ, Channel Nein need a rocket up them. I hate watching Friday night footy because of the ads, but I can't not watch Brisbane vs Sydney!

Interestingly, is the ANZAC test between Australia and NZ going to be shown live?

Not to my knowledge, I doubt it will be, it'll just take the normal FNF timeslot.

However, if it is otherwise, could someone point it out please.

Doesn't worry me though, I got my ticket :)

Cheers.

The AFL wiped the floor clean in the ratings, yet all you guys are dead set cock-a-hoop that the League got more viewers in a league heartland (despite the fact nearly 40,000 attended the Lions match - ie real supporters - so were not at a tv screen  )

Pick up the Australian today... Thursday Night AFL came in 22nd, and the NRL is not even in the top 50   so who knows where it came in?
