In the only instance where the Broncos are likely to be challenged by the Lions up in Brisbane on TV, the boys from Red Hill have won the battle.
The replayed Broncos v Roosters game had 50,000 more viewers than the live and heavily promoted Lions v Collingwood bore fest. According to 4BC's Greg Carey, they were 50,000 in front in both the average and peak audiences.
Last year all we heard was crowing AFL fans up north regarding the Lions v Coll game defeating the Good Friday Broncos game. In reality, they only beat the Broncos' peak figure, while the league had the higher average. But of course the media preferred to focus on the PEAK for the sake of the story and the good old AFL.
This year the media has been very quiet about the results of this year's battle, mainly because the Broncos took the Lions down on all counts.
Of course both games were on different nights, but that didn't stop the media billing it as a "battle for the remote controls of Brisbane."
The Lions failed to come even close to the Broncos for the remainder of 2003 and methinks that will be the case again this year.
And as for games not involving the Lions in Brisbane, the test pattern does better.
Brisbane still is a rugby league town.
