The girlfriend of William Green was arrested Wednesday night and charged with stabbing the Cleveland Browns running back.

Green spent the day at two hospitals after receiving a stab wound in the back, beneath his left shoulder blade.

Asia Gray, 22, was charged with felonious assault and domestic violence. She was held overnight in the Westlake city jail pending arraignment in Rocky River municipal court.

Browns president Carmen Policy said Wednesday afternoon that Green's wound was caused "by a sharp instrument, perhaps a steak knife."

"It's sad that he was involved in a situation like that," coach Butch Davis said. "Certainly his teammates and coaches are glad it was not more severe."

The wound was serious enough, though, that Green was taken by ambulance from St. John's Westshore Hospital in Westlake to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, a larger trauma center that is more equipped to deal with these kind of injuries.

"It's not life-threatening," Westlake police Capt. Guy Turner said. "My understanding is he is being kept overnight. (But) we don't charge people with felonious assault when you have a superficial wound."

Green's home was sealed during the day, and late Wednesday night, police searched the home and Green's Ford SUV after obtaining warrants.

Turner said any information about what was found in the searches would not be released until today.

Turner said a 911 call was placed from Green's home at 10:43 a.m. A woman -- whose voice was highly emotional -- said her fiance had cut himself and needed an ambulance.

An emergency crew was dispatched to Green's house, but he was not there. He soon arrived at St. John's in a car with one other adult and an infant. Turner said he thought Gray, the mother of Green's two children, drove the car.

Green was examined, then taken by ambulance to MetroHealth for treatment. Team owner Randy Lerner visited Green in the hospital, and told Policy the wound was treated without surgery or stitches.

A hospital spokesman told the Associated Press that Green requested no information be released.

Green, who will turn 24 on Dec. 17, first told police he was injured when he fell walking up the steps carrying several items, including a knife.

Turner would not say if Gray had confessed.

"I don't want to characterize her statements, except to say that we developed probable cause to make an arrest," Turner said.

Police interviewed Green and described him as "somewhat" cooperative.

Much has happened with Green in the past few weeks. He was arrested on DUI/marijuana possession charges on Oct. 27. On Nov. 8, the league suspended him for four games for violating the terms of his substance-abuse treatment program. The suspension was for using alcohol.

While Green is suspended, the Browns are not allowed to have any contact with him. (The league made an exception for Lerner's hospital visit.) Policy lamented that communication void, but said Green is getting a lot of treatment and care.

"But in order for the treatment and care to work the underlying problems have to be faced and resolved," Policy said, clearly hinting that the team believes he needs to disassociate himself from Gray.

Policy said the Browns will stand behind Green.

"I like him a great deal," Policy said.

"I'm not sure how well I know him. I empathize with him but I'm not sure I fully understand his pain. All I can keep doing is what everyone in the building is doing and try to help him as best I can. Everyone prays he is going to make it."

How long do the Browns go with Green?

"I guess we go as long as we possibly can until it becomes obvious there's nothing more we can do," Policy said.

Yeah, but it's pretty soft letting your wife stab you, and then trying to protect her. Talk about the whip in a relationship...
