who can remember that statement? it was just prior to or just aft the 2001 gf. what is this guys problem? if you inform the world that your team is overacheiving what do you think a bunch of young blokes will do, my opinion is they will be deflated, especially when they fail the inevitable as they did in ythat yr.
one must question the motivational factors behind these words and wonder why he spoke them to any one.
on the flip side what will he say now that they are under acheivers? , or that he is in fact the only under acheiver?, lets face it you or I could have gotten that 2001 side into the winners circle that yr cause they really were that good {ok maybe not me}in my opinion this comment puts a huge cloud over the way this guy comes across to the players thus causing a mass exodus of players .
in his mind [bs] he must want a team of nobodies to win a gf under him so he can truely be called a super coach, UNFORTUNANTLY THAT AINT ABOUT TO HAPPEN

even worse, they are not comments players or fans want to hear, they are his thoughts and he should have kept them to himself

I heard him make comments along those lines at the 2002 season ticket holders forum, in relation to 2001.

I had no problem with what he said, when taken in context.

Basically, he wasn't referring to the talent or ability of the side to win the minor premiership or make the grand final.

If my memory is right, it was more in reference to the exceptionally high standard of play they reached in some matches, and that basically that it was a standard he wasn't expecting the players to reach so soon.

Happy to be corrected on that context though

I love when the experts reflect on irrelevant statements from 3 years ago to prove their point...   .....if it was such a terrible thing to say then why not mention it then.

In 2001, Smithy was a genius. The 2001 minir premiership was a tribute to the skills the man posessed, and the health of the support and development staff.

That's what makes the seasons since then so irritating. Smith, the man who was on the verge of coaching immortality, is now a totally underachieving flop.

The overachieving tag doesn't seem to have affected Penrith and IMO I still think we have more talent across the park, we just need to find some confidence.

In the recent RL week survey BS topped the list of coaches that players DONT want to play under ! The players arnt stupid. They want to play under someone who is prepared to listen to advice, to be able to reward achievement with 1st grade selection, and to give them some sort of hope instead of using his favourites. Casey Maguire was a classic example. 5 years .. thats right 5 years he spent at Parra. never once got a run on in the top grade and then went to the Broncos and is a star at lock.
Im sorry Brian just has to listen to some advice from others. At the moment everyone is telling him that we need a ballplaying specialist 5 8th in the team but he is persisting with Dan Wagon. His rationale is that we need Wags there because he is a good defender. If that was a solid rationale then the Bulldogs would be beaten every week as they have Thurston at 5/ 8 who is about 80 kgs ringing wet and couldnt knock over an old lady.
Sorry Brian .. it just doesnt hold water. You are persisting with Wagon and the backs starve.
We will not win whilst Brian continues to ignore good advice just for the sake of it.
God only knows what Chris Thorman thinks of it !!

Misty Bee and Parralight have hit the nail right on the head. And onother thing is it just me or does Brian Smith think that a 5/8 role differs to whatever evryone else thinks. For eg when he was at Saints he played his brother Tony Smith at 5/8 and Mundine and Phil Blake were on the bench. Then when he came to parra he made Jason Bell a 5/8, now Wagon. We bought a 5/8th in Dykes yet he puts him at halfback!!! while Witt and Thorman are just hanging in Premier League.

Come on Brian listen to the people, for once in your life. Pleaaaaaaaaase, I beg you.

lets go further .. wasnt Graham BRADLEY his favourite player at the Saints ? and in England ? he was about 100 kgs (in an era when players were a lot lighter) as slow as a wet week and BS played him at 5/ 8 .... and they say History never repeats itself.

Actually I have it on good authority (oh no not another rumour without a source) .... Ok all I can say is the training staff- sorry
Is that Brian has told Wags that he is at 5 / 8 for the immediate future and thats it. - and he will not change his mind.
So we better get used to it.

Firstly, let me say - I don't want Wags at 5/8th - put him at bloody lock for god's sake!!!! - and hell yes we need a ball playing 5/8th!!!!....now for the other stuff...

- the survey's are a load of crap....one survey found smith the 2nd most liked coach AND 2nd players would least like to play under....so read what u want into it.

- Casey Maguire is a solid player - NOT a star lock.....and he wasn't a walk in starter for the Broncos when he left Parra and went there - it has taken him a few years to cement a spot.

- What was wrong with playing Jason Bell at 5/8th? - I think he had the skills for the position and did a good job.

- As far as I remember (I can't say I followed the saints with great interest) - Bradley played damn near all his footy in the centres - not at 5/8th.....either Tony Smith or Bradley were 5/8th, not both....Mundine was very young in those days - and I am 100% certain he has great respect for BS - so if Anthony has no problems with how he was played then, there is no issue (and we know Anthony has a very vocal opinion on everything!).
