Bulldogs boss Mortimer quits
March 22, 2004

BULLDOGS chief executive Steve Mortimer announced his resignation from the rugby league club this morning.

He told a press conference in Sydney his decision was effective immediately.

Mortimer also resigned as director of the club in the wake of the recent sex scandal.

He said: "The last few weeks have been traumatic and gut-wrenching for all concerned, but now is the time for healing, and for those who genuinely care about the club to turn their attention and energy to rebuilding it."

Club chairman George Peponis acknowledged Mortimer's contribution to the club over more than two decades.

"I would like to acknowledge Steve's integrity, his leadership and his honesty," Peponis said.

"He is taking himself off the field so that the Bulldogs can go forward."

Just had a listen to the audio from his press conference. Mortimer referred to "wanting to remember the Bulldogs as a family club" and how the decisions in the last few days was about taking a stand on nepotism in the club.

What a shame. This guy had to fall on his sword and what wrong doing was he part of? I hope he is remembered well.

Turvey has done a massive job for that club.
There is nothing more he could have done.
A sad day for the Dogs and a big loss to Rugby League.
Why is League losing guys like him?
Whether the Dogs are found guilty or not of rape is up to the court.
One thing there behaviour has done has caused the Dogs to lose 2 of their best clubmen.

I think he knows a lot that we don't!!!

Not sure if that's why he's getting out or not though.

I think it's too tough for him to handle, and I don't blame him. Who wants to be dragged though that crap?!?

He was reluctant to join anyway because he has his own business

I guess he thought "I dont need this shit"

You know that mug Terry Lamb is on the board? I got told today by a Doggies fan that apparently the day after the shit hit the fan about players wearing shorts and thongs to the cop station, Baa Baa showed up at the board meeting in t-shirt, shorts and thongs.

Nice one.
