NRL fines Bulldogs $20,000 over Lewis head knock breach

Canterbury have been issued a $20,000 fine by the NRL for failing to immediately remove Lachlan Lewis from the field after a head knock during round four.

Under NRL rules, any player who exhibits clear signs of motor incoordination or possible motor incoordination must be removed from the field immediately.

The NRL acknowledges the Bulldogs did view injury surveillance screen replays and removed Lewis from the field within two minutes of further elapsed game time.

When considering the proposed penalty, the NRL took into account the club’s compliance to this part of the policy and that Lewis did not remain on the field for any tactical purpose.

The NRL has reminded clubs that "all officials and coaching staff, beyond club doctors and trainers, have a responsibility to be alert to player reactions after head knocks during a game".

The Bulldogs have not yet commented on the fine but have five business days to respond to the breach notice.

Everyone who saw it knew straight away he was clearly concussed except the bulldogs trainer and coaching staff. It was literally a textbook category 1 concussion (motor discoordination)

Put an nrl doc in the video ref box. Doc says " just replay that there, yep that player must come off for hia" vid ref gives the word to the ref. Ref orders player from the field for hia.

18th man able to take the field if player does not return.

Trainers are employed by club, therefore biased, player does not want to let the boys down, therefore neither able to be objective and neither cares about the NRL focus on hia while in the battle themselves.

Hence the massive fine
