The Glen Mills Bulls battled a determined Washington DC Slayers outfit to score a 28 - 4 victory to start the season with two wins from as many matches. Although the Slayers went down, they will certainly be a force to be reckoned with in the 2006 competition, their current record now standing at 1-1.

Leading 4-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Bulls produced some exciting Rugby League in the second period to challenge a physical Slayers squad. Tries from Kevin Deal and Chris Craig helped the current Ferrainola Cup Champions to extend their lead to 16-4 at the halftime break.

Led by David Faimanifo, Tom Collins and JC Rocha, the Slayers certainly matched the Bulls in the physical battle up front. They will no doubt cause many teams problems as they develop new players as the exciting development in the DC area continues under the leadership of Tom Collins, Craig Webb, and Philip Hill.

The Bulls were again able to rely on the skill and experience of Marcus Vassilakopoulos and Captain Erik Hollingsworth to lead them around the field with tremendous support from Chris Craig, who has regained the form that made him a formidable force for many years in the AMNRL competition.

Good news for the Bulls is the continuing development of prop Bryan Confer, and a group of new players from college football that have really impressed in the short time they have been learning the game. Corey Benson, Jermaine Bennett, Darren Lewis, and Mike Mertz will be worth keeping an eye on as the season develops and they become more experienced.

The Slayers will certainly make a big impression on the season in upcoming matches, and based on this match will be a strong playoff contender.

On an overcast and humid Thursday evening the DC Slayers welcomed the Glen Mills Bulls to a match up of round 1 winners. The Slayers were coming off of a victory over Jacksonville, while Glen Mills bounced Philadelphia last week. Both teams were determined to start the season 2-0.

The Slayers were happy to welcome back former Tomahawks JC Rocha and Dave Faimanifo along with former Slayers players Josh Stallings.

The game started with the Bulls receiving the ball. They worked their game plan to perfection and moved the ball down the field. On the the fifth and last tackle, the Bulls went in for the try in the left side of the try zone. The kick was missed and the Bulls were up 4-0.

Both teams went back and forth for the next 15 minutes with hard tackles, and Glen Mills kept the pressure on. The Bulls were not giving the Slayers any relief. All Slayer's mistakes were punished.

With the 20 minute mark closely approaching, the Bulls were pressuring again, and scored when the snuck under for a try on the left side. The kick was missed and the Bulls were up 8-0.

The Slayers responded back driving down the field with some good work by Dave Faiminafo, Josh Stallings, and Luis Tambussi. The Slayers had the ball at the five meter line ready to close the score but a knock on turned the ball over to the Bulls.

The Bulls were again able to rely on the skill and experience of Marcus Vassilakopoulos and Captain Erik Hollingsworth to lead them around the field with tremendous support from Chris Craig, who has regained the form that made him a formidable force for many years in the AMNRL competition.

The Bulls put two more tries on the board and had the Slayers reeling. Down 16-0, the Slayers were getting ready to be down 20-0, when the Bulls player crossed the try line, but JC Rocha was able to push the Bull out of bounds before he could touch down. With confidence up, the Slayer were able to put together a nice offensive set and had newcomer Greg McGlockin go in over the right side with a great slashing run right before halftime. The Bulls were up 16-4 at halftime, but the Slayers were confident.

The second half saw more constant pressure by the Bulls. The Bulls played the majority of the half in the Slayer's end. If not for tough goal line defense, the gap would have been much wider.

At the end of the day, the Bulls got the result they deserved. The Slayers were inconsistent due to pressure by the Bulls and lack of cohesion. Bright spots were there were a lot of first time players with Mike Byrd, Jim Floyd, Nick Hildebidle, Dave Hodap, Joe G., and Joey Purcell were introduced to the AMNRL.

The post game party was a good time, and for all the fans, we did exact some revenge in quarters, so it was not a total loss. How about that for some spin?

Until next week, when the Slayers have a big game against the Sharks in NJ. The Sharks are coming off a victory over Philadelphia.
