I've kept quiet figuring that someone would correct these geese on both Channel Nein and Fox. I don't know if it's stupidity, short memory or what but it seems every time the red and green get their mugs on TV, the commentators sprout some stupid line about them holding every piece of silverware on offer. Not only did they not win the J. J. Giltinan Shield, the last time they won it was 1971. It's a pretty f**king big trophy, surely they'd notice it missing from the cabinet (if they could remember what it looked like).

If you're going to make shit up, might as well go big - why not claim they hold the Davis Cup, Americas Cup and the Formula One Constructors Championship also. I'm sure the large population of clueless cardinal & myrtle sheep will believe it.

I see where you're coming from, and you're half right. Yes, the last time you won the minor premiership was 1989, but the J.J. Giltinan Shield has only been awarded for the minor premiership since 1997. It was actually awarded to the GF winners up until then, which is why Souths got the shield in 1971 when Manly were minor premiers.

Considering my original comments were around the "silverware" and not the actual accomplishment, as quoted by the commentators, my point stands.

The Giltinan has only been awarded for the Minor Premiership since 1997. Before that it was awarded to the winner of the Grand Final. So Souths have not won the Giltinan Shield since 1971, notwithstanding that they were Minor Premiers in 1989.

the trophy that matters the most is the premiership trophy, and Souths have won it 21 times, if you didn't already know - i didn't mind reminding you!

out of the rest of the current nrl teams, easts are 2nd all the way back on 13 premierships

I actually think that is a type of mentality that Michael Maguire is trying to change at the club. What he is trying to instill at the club is that every trophy is just as important as the other and our aim is to win every single piece of silverware that is on offer. I was initially skeptical of this mentality as it puts players at risk of injury. However, I think the positives far outweigh the negatives in that such an attitude gives us a competitive edge and fosters a winning mentality. Also, it does look good for the club when you constantly read in the press that "Souths have won everything that has been on offer to them".

oh don't get me wrong, winning the other trophies are great too! i enjoyed watching them win the Nines and the World Club Challenge very much! Madge is a great coach!

I enjoyed it when Easts won the Premiership, Minor Premiership and World Club Challenge. It was enjoyable.

I wouldn't have invoked the slogan of one of the Worlds dullest car companies to explain my happiness though.
