Ciro made a point of changing his number to emphasise that he will be driving the team and then explained it to the media. Would he have been better to keep it in house, not change numbers and get the jump on the opposition as they play catch-up when they realise it during the game?

Irrelevant in the modern game what number he wears. Generally you have a controlling half back and a running halfback. The numbers are interchangeable as are the roles during the game if you’re lucky enough to have two talented ones.
