No we shouldn’t cutting or merging teams (mergers are literally the dumbest idea somehow foistered on this game) although to be honest that hasn’t happened for twenty odd years and not likely to happen again unless some club becomes insolvent.

Getting a bunch of skinny unco white kids from Melbourne Adelaide and Perth and getting them to play in homebush … a new suburb with no history was just stupid

the western surburbs are multicultural (Middle East, Pacific Islander) and homebush is more swans territory

gws are the worst expansion team in Australian football history and the afl are just going to keep putting in ever increasing money for no result

they should’ve stayed in Blacktown and tried to be an actual western Sydney team

Most of them spend a year or two out of the afl bubble in the northern states and want to go back

I don’t think we need to cut any teams. We just need to stop adding more to NSW and QLD.
Qld will need at least one more with the population growth up there (south west)

if png are to be seriously considered one day then a joint bid with cairns makes sense

and this still leaves easts tigers out of the nrl and they would make an excellent nrl club

I don’t think need is the right word as we already have three sides in SEQ. Perhaps like to is a better word. Titans aren’t strong enough yet and you would need the approval of the Broncos for it to happen.

PNG is a non starter until they are a developed country.

Perth and NZ 2 should happen. Then you decide what you do with the 20th side - essentially what is going to make the most money.

The slate of mergers in the immediate aftermath of the Superleague war was poorly thought-out, hastily arranged, and damn near set up to fail.

The NRL should have had some guts & taken oversight of how Sydney was to be structured - everything from juniors to home stadiums - in 1998, and deployed a well managed 5-10 year plan to get to an efficient end-result.

Plus, that should have been part of an over-arching plan of how to maximise the game's footprint - keeping things like Adelaide, Perth & 2nd Brisbane clubs, while adding Melbourne.

There comes a time with expansion when it’s not just about money

the money comes from another brisbane team

then we start spending that money on genuine expansion ie png

compare gws in afl and png in nrl and tell me which is the better long term investment

the dolphins and the jets ? Are going to help provide good increases in future tv rights

we don’t need to spend all that money on existing clubs they already get too much and the salary cap as well doesn’t need to go much higher either

the arlc should grow a set and give png a team even if it means they have to give them an extra 5 million pa over other clubs

Well keeping Cronulla and getting rid of Perth (all news ltd ideas) was absolutely stupid but that’s what they did

killing off souths (probably the most popular Australian rugby league club) and the crushers and titans by the arl was stupid too

the only plus side was news ltd made the storm a success. More out of spite to the arl

Neither are to be brutally honest, although for very different reasons.

Fumbleball made the money from their entry (yes not entirely because of it) in order for them to invest that money, although I’d agree in saying that for a variety of reasons already discussed it will probably never work out for them. It will never reach the levels of the Swans for example.

PNG would never be a success on the field I’m afraid to say, unless their economic and social situations considerably change. The only way a Pacific/PNG side could ever work is if they played their games in Australia and New Zealand

ideally we should be looking at a 4th SEQLD team by now but due to the games strategic incompetence we are about 20-30 years behind where we should be in this region.

They will be team 19

one hundred percent

it will have given the dolphins five years or so to get established

then we will have broncos in the centre, dolphins to the north, jets to the south west and titans to the south east

that will lay the platform for Perth or nz2 or png (depending who misses out as team 18)

There should be no need for more than 2 clubs in Brisbane if they are both good at their jobs. The fact we are talking about the need for a Brisbane3 shows what a bad decision the Dolphins may have been.

We should have had 2 Brisbane teams + Gold Coast since the 90s, also Perth and maybe Adelaide. If all these existed then I think we would be looking at possibly a Sunshine Coast team. This is all hypothetical.

Mate, the decision to give the Dolphins a license has basically made it inevitable that the NRL will need at least 2-3 more clubs in Brisbane over the long term to maintain saturation of the Brisbane market.

Given that there's a limited amount of space in the competition at any one time, and that the same could have been achieved with 2 teams, that's a terrible outcome as it's going to heavily restrict the potential growth and flexibility of the competition over next 50+ years.

Imagine if an American league had invested in a team in every borough of New York at the expense of teams in some of the other large metro markets like e.g. Dallas, Philadelphia, and Miami... Whether they realise it or not, and I highly doubt they do BTW, that's the equivalent of what the NRL has decided to do.
