Chris Bailey is no longer a Sea Eagle! :D

The Manly Sea Eagles have released utility player Chris Bailey from the final season of his contract to allow him to sign a three year deal in the English Super League with the London Harlequins.

Bailey joined Manly from the Newcastle Knights in 2009 and played 46 games in his two seasons with the club.

He has played five eighth, centre, lock and second row with the Sea Eagles.

Manly coach Des Hasler said the club was reluctantly releasing Bailey from the final season of his contract.

“Because of salary cap restraints we couldn’t offer Chris Bailey a future beyond next season but this opportunity gives him an exciting extension to his career.

“In his two seasons with Manly he has been a tremendous asset to our club and he goes with our best wishes. He is a terrific player to coach and his ability to play anywhere benefits any club he joins,” Hasler said.

Bailey said he would have liked to have had another season at Manly but couldn’t pass up the opportunity to miss out on the chance to extend his career in England.

The 28 year old said he had enjoyed his two seasons at Manly.

“They are a great club and I have made lots of close mates among the playing group. I wish them well for the future and will be following their progress closely,” Bailey said.

Bailey will replace a former Manly player – Luke Williamson – at the London based club. Williamson retired recently after a long career at Canberra, Adelaide and Manly.

Baily was a good player for you guys. Offered you alot of flexibility in terms of utility. Im pretty sure he could slot in on the bench on any team.

Maybe they can give Trex angry pills during the off season, he hopefully can fit the second row interchange spot....

thats my bet.. i loved the way he ran over people, really changed my opinion of him, he just doesnt fire up enough... maybe off the bench he can impact more

yeah, I cant say I am disappointed he is leaving, was pretty happy when he signed but I had never really seen him play much. Not sure what happened but never really got much chance at 5/8 so good luck Chris.

Yeah I can't say I'm dissapointed either. Was a reasonable bloke from my dealings with him, was just a shocking 5/8. No other words to describe it unfortunately. Added no flair or spark to our attack at all. Even when he played in the back row I didn't feel he offered much either - missed loads of tackles and dropped the ball when we could least afford it. The money he was signed for initially could be much better spent on junior development and upgrading some of the up and comers contracts.

I remember Bailey at Newy. He looked to have tremendous talent, good deceptive speed, strong with good support player awareness. When he came to Manly it appeared he had put on either too much weight or too much muscle, whatever, geez he was slower than his Knights days. He had tremendous ability but probably not the natural work-rate to make it as a lock forward. In the end he made a solid interchange back up player but didn't offer any X Factor. It was disappointing we didn't see his best.
