Former Tiger Joel Caine has had a little rant over the weekend about bye points on the ladder - he says its misleading and confusing. In the replies, Warren Smith pointed out that under the Gallop-Annesley regime some time ago, they were added back in after having been removed. Caine then points out that Souths - who've won the most games - are second because of the arbitrary points being added.

I think get rid of them. Produces too much confusion at this time of year IMO, and doesn't have a material impact come end of season.
I think you’re absolutely correct, and they should be done away with.

But the cynic in me says that for this to happen, the NRL would need to appoint a director for byes, elect a committee from clubs voted for by the grassroots members, enlist the services of a team of academics to conduct research into the social and economic impacts, and hold a conference in Vanuatu in 2023 inviting all key stakeholders to review the findings.

Byes should be worth random amounts of points.
Break out the roulette wheel. Points given for the bye will be conducted at Jupiters Casino.

So the Queensderpers won't feel left out.

Anyway who gives a hoot? The only points that matter are the ones at the end of Round 26.

am i missing something?
everyone gets a bye, everyone gets 2 points - yes its redundant- but why is this a thing
Fmd...totally agree, people seem to think it gives an advantage to any team. If they give them away nothing changes. I understand that if there were no byes a team would have to play & the result might end up different, but that would apply to everyone, even those teams affected by origin - lets face it, thats why there are bye rounds. Either or, every team gets one

Having no points for a bye would have precisely the same effect as having two points for a bye: It would skew the table during the period there are byes. One point for a bye would be better, or else make competition points the % of games won which would give an accurate ladder.
