Not sure if other International teams are attending but PNG is sending over a Development Team.

Also should acknowledge the great relationship that is blooming between the Penrith Panthers and the PNGRFL.

20th January 2015

MEDIA RELEASE
PNGRFL ANNOUNCE CHAIRMANS XV FOR CABRAMATTA 9’S

PNGRFL Chairman Sandis Tsaka has today announced his Chairman’s select squad for the Cabramatta 9’s tournament in Sydney on Saturday the 31st January 2015.

The attendance of the PNG side at the tournament is funded through the PNG Olympic Committees “Go for Gold” program and is a vital tournament leading up to this year Pacific Games said Tsaka;

“The PNGRFL has established a database of players identified through the various PNGRFL programs delivered in 2014 and the Digicel Cup. I want to point out that this is NOT a National side – it is a continuation of the development and identification program we have established for the Pacific Games. We want as wide a group as possible to have experience at a high level.

This will ensure we have the best possible squad selected for the Pacific Games with the experience required to win the Gold for PNG. A lot of players that have been selected were part of the successful undefeated Commonwealth Championship Glasgow 9’s team. They deserve their selection and this tournament is a further step in their development. They get to step up and play against some quality teams in what is widely regarded as the best 9’s tournament in Australia outside of the Auckland NRL 9’s."

Tsaka said the emphasis was on youth in his selection and the chance to blood some new young talent to test the players;
“The average age of the squad is 20 years of age so it’s a very young team. While we certainly want them to compete well the tournament is more about finding out who can step up and perform at that level and continuing the development of these young talents. Philemon Kimisive who is part of the SP PNG Hunters Squad has been included to give him that added experience and at only 18 years of age, 6’3”, quick, strong and athletic he will be a welcome addition.”

Tsaka said the team will be based at Penrith Leagues Club, largely thanks to the strong relationship built between the Penrith Panthers NRL Club and Executive General Manager Phil Gould;
“The team will depart on Sunday the 25th January and will be based at Penrith Leagues Club for a week leading into the 9’s, where they will have access to the facilities and staff of the Panthers NRL team. Phil Gould has been fantastic in his assistance with the program and we have forged a very strong relationship with the Panthers.

The players will benefit enormously from the experience and having access to an NRL setup. Stanton Albert who was a member of the Commonwealth Championship team in 2014 and who has recently joined the Panthers on a two-year contract has been allowed by the Panthers to take part in the Tournament. It’s a wonderful example of what can be achieved through a partnership with an NRL club and we thank the Panthers and Phil Gould for their assistance.”

Kumul Head Coach Mal Meninga will coach the side with Stanley Hondina the assistant Coach, Shane Morris the Tour Manager/Head Trainer and National Development Manager Toksy Nema as assistant;

“It’s a highly professional group of people that will be looking after the squad and I know they will be as well prepared as possible. Its great to welcome Stanley and I know they will all work together well to deliver a strong performance.”
Tsaka said the PNGRFL had hit the ground running this year;

“Shane and his team at the PNGRFL have been instrumental in getting this program together. Apart from the Tournament we also have our annual Development Officers Conference at NSI in Goroka this week, the AGM at the end of the month and the first round of our coach and referee accreditation courses in February. It’s a big year ahead and we are well advanced in our planning and delivery of our programs.”

We are fielding two teams through Maltese Heritage RL.

Our head coach says we can expect 1 to 3 of the players pull on the national team shirt in Malta's matches later this summer.

Fiji also sending a strong team. A mixture of home grown and Australian based players.
Could probably be the strongest of the International Teams.

The Fiji Steelers competing at the 2015 NSWRL Cabramatta International 9's in Sydney this weekend! They are in Pool H with East Campbelltown Eagles, Concord Burdwood and Phillippines 3.
Some more information:

The Fiji Steelers believe a top-two finish is within their reach at this weekend's Cabramatta Nines rugby league tournament in Sydney.
32 teams from Australia, Asia, Europe, North and South America and the Pacific will take part in the latest edition of the international nines.
The Steelers team includes five players based in Fiji with the rest made up from Fijians playing in Australia.
Head coach Bill Tukana believes his team is good enough to make it to the grand final.
"So I want to gel up these forwards, experienced boys from here [in Australia] - former Fiji Bati players - and these upcoming young talents [from Fiji] will play the roles in the backline and mix them together so I'm pretty confident we will give the Cabra Nines other teams a good show. The team I have put together this year I have no doubt, I have full confidence in this team - we will be the underdogs and I won't be surprised if we reach the grand final".

Emerging nations believe a Rugby League Nines World Series could be the answer as interest continues to skyrocket in the newest form of the game.

A rugby league nines World Series is being proposed as the shorter form of the game continues to expand its global reach.
While much of the focus this weekend will be on the star-studded NRL Auckland Nines, across the Tasman 32 teams from five continents and the Pacific will be lining up in Sydney.

The Cabramatta International Nines was first held in 2003 and has grown from small beginnings to be a meeting spot for the next wave of rugby league talent. Vanuatu and the Philippines made their debut three years ago, forming a close relationship that led to a full test match between the two countries in October. Philippines Rugby League founder and coach Clayton Watene says the tournament has helped put them on the map.

CLAYTON WATENE: We first started off with one team. We were struggling at one stage there to get a full side out there on the paddock. Look when Vanuatu first started they were quite successful in their first hit out. They went to the championship final and we went to the bowl championship so for two minnow teams to come into the competition to do successful is pretty good. The following year we ended up putting three sides in and the now this is our second year of having four sides in the competition.

Kumuls coach Mal Meninga will take charge of a Papua New Guinea team that includes a number of players from last year's gold medal winning side at the Commonwealth Nines Championship in Glasgow. With the rugby league nines included in this years Pacific Games in Port Moresby, PNGRFL Chair Sandis Tsaka says Cabramatta is a valuable opportunity to blood young talent. American Samoa also return after a year away. Coach Paul Roebeck says the bulk of his players are based in New Zealand, with one in Sydney, and former Junior Warriors halfback and Greek international Jordan Meads travelling from the UK.

PAUL ROEBECK: It definitely fills up. They get a massive turnout and it's a great day. It seems to get better and better every year. I think it attracts more players. My biggest problem is a lot of clubs won't release their players to American Samoa, they would rather have them in their clubs but this year we've got them all released. We've got quite a few good names in there this year so we are looking for a a great result.

The Fiji Steelers team includes five players based in Fiji with the rest made up from Fijians playing in Australia.
Head coach Bill Tukana believes his team will be a contender for the title.

BILL TUKANA: So I want to gel up these forwards, experienced boys from here [in Australia] - former Fiji Bati players - and these upcoming young talents [from Fiji] will play the roles in the backline and mix them together so I'm pretty confident we will give the Cabra Nines other teams a good show. The team I have put together this year I have no doubt, I have full confidence in this team - we will be the underdogs and I won't be surprised if we reach the grand final".

Niue, Samoa and the Cook islands will also be flying the Pacific flag, while Canada, Malta, Portugal, Thailand, El Salvador and Chile ensure a truly global feel.
Clayton Watene says the clash with the NRL Nines is unfortunate but believes what's happening at Cabramatta could be the start of something even bigger.

CLAYTON WATENE: It's a shame that it's on the same weekend because we love to watch the nines contest but we are all gonna be busy of course so we are pretty disappointed it is on the same weekend. I think from a personal aspect I can see it going to like the rugby clubrooms like a sevens network. I reckon we can have more and more interest coming on board, more and more sponsors and things like that. I can see it going like a full nines circuit. Why not? Especially with the NRL nines making it a lot more popular for us as well.

The Cabramatta Nines kick off bright and early this Saturday at the St Mary's Leagues Stadium in the Blue Mountains.
