Can someone please tell Channel 9 that AFL doesn't rate in QLD and NSW

Seriously...this is an outrage.

THE AFL's stunning prosperity seems assured for the next decade, with Channel 9 certain to bid for the next television rights amid predictions of a five-year $1 billion term.
There had been speculation the death of sports lover Kerry Packer and Nine's new ownership structure might see the network decide to opt out of the AFL rights race.

The network has this year slashed costs in all departments under majority ownership from private equity firm CVC Asia Pacific.

However Nine insiders say the network has already considered its options and will throw its resources at the rights, which could be decided much earlier than the end of this deal, which expires after the 2012 season.

Frenzied bidding for the rights would ensure the AFL could continue its expansion plans into Queensland and Sydney, while still funding the 16 existing sides.

While anti-siphoning rules mean Foxtel cannot seal a deal for all eight games, then sell off some games to rivals, it can still be a key player in negotiations.

That would see the rights rise again, possibly as high as the magical $1 billion mark during five seasons.

The Foxtel-Nine deal for the 2012 Olympic Games in the British capital London is considered the prototype for a prospective AFL deal.

The AFL could also boost its broadcast value by selling off the rights in individual packages, dividing Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays.

There will be no first and last rights agreement, which in 2006 allowed Seven to usurp Nine, meaning the highest bid will win.

Should Nine and Foxtel work together for the rights, they could then farm off several games to another network, likely to be Channel 10.

The AFL would be expected to keep one network out of telecasting football to increase competition and ensure the value of its TV rights remained high.

In the days before his death in December 2005, Packer signed off on a monster bid from Nine, but Seven and Ten soon matched it.

It has left Nine frozen out of the AFL market. But after losing the ratings for the first time this year, it is determined to win back rights to a game that is a ratings bonanza.

Last month Nine spent up on a $110 million deal that will see it telecast the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics.

New boss David Gyngell presented the deal to the IOC, but Nine powerbrokers Eddie McGuire and Jeff Browne were also integral to the deal.

The madness continues....

To be honest I would love in nein won AFL.

It'll mean either 7 or 10 won't co-host it, and RL can go to someone else.

The question Kurt is

A) Will the NRL ever have the balls to leave 9?

B) Can we ever hope to get our true value while networks scramble between themselves to pay overs for AFL

C) How the hell is their deal worth so much, and ours so little when 4 out of the top 5 shows in Australia were RL.

It beggars belief...and only strengthens my view that RL needs to flush out all of the vested interests in the game. That being Telstra, News and Fox

id be amazed if one network could afford both the NRL and AFL rights in the future. So if nine go for AFL i would think there is a solid chance the NRL would be moving on to another channel.

and now the packers are basically gone from nine i think the NRL wont have a problem moving on.

Right -- this means RL is in for a incredible payday come 2012...

Looking at it rationally, the entire RL package (including SoO, Test matches, etc.) is worth more. More games, more people watching, more affulent markets...

If the NRL and ARL can't wrangle similar deals to the AFL at the same time then they should resign.

Just wondering about the best way to maximise our TV revenue for the next deal. How about selling the season as a set of packages. Assuming that we've got 9 games per round after adding two more teams sometime in the next 5 years.

Monday night footy (must be to a FTA network)
Friday night football doubleheader
Saturday night
Sunday arvo
State of Origin
Tests

The we just have to make sure that at least MNF and Origin are broadcast live nationally, with digital tv this shouldn't be such a no-go as it is currently.

Agree 100%. If we're going to have MNF then it should be at least on FTA. Also I believe we must split the NRL, Origin, and Internationals... I don't know why they continue to bunch them together.

I'd like to see a new FTA network broadcast some NRL next contract. I think we should stay with Nein for some games, but test the waters with another network (i.e. Seven or Ten).

I believe Seven had some interest last time around and I also read somewhere that they had some interest in International RL rights.

7 used to carry union tests didn't they? (actually I think they might've dropped them altogether now).

Our tv rights will skyrocket since the three commercial networks (there might be another one by 2012) are all chasing us and the afl. Union has completely fallen by the wayside and the A-League is exclusively on Fox sports for the next decade or something.

id like to see rugby league on ten, they do a good job with afl so hopefully they can do the same to league, with the current additions to the seven and ten networks of a high definition channel (a second channel) and assuming nine's is comming soon then hopefully the number of free to air games will increase however that does depend on fox

Yes, but rationality for some reason seems completely absent when it comes to the respective deals that both codes get. RL is at the very least, the very least, the equal of AFL nationally when you consider we have 3 different tiers of football to broadcast.

I hate being owned by a media company. Raped and pillaged.

I definitely agree we should split origin and test football out.

The AFL is looking to expand in NSW & QLD so as to justify a potential billion dollar tv deal.

So should the NRL be looking to do the same. Plonk a team in Perth and Adelaide just in time for a new tv contract? More teams in more areas means more money. In theory.

It so sad. The people doing the negotiation are the people who have the TV station, and people wonder why we get ripped off?????? Is it that hard to work out?

The 2012 TV deals could be a watershed time for the two codes and who goes on to become the undisputed heavyweight Australian Champion.

If the AFL get a billion and the NRL only gets 600 million we are stuffed for years to come. The AFL will move heaven and earth to increase the games popularity in NSW and Q'land as they know once they get those two states they have won the war.

I fear for the ability of the NRL to negotiate a deal that is on par or betters what AFL will get. This is for two reasons, one we have a massive conflict of interest on the board of the NRL that will impare the ferocity with which the game is sold on the open market and two the AFL is seen as the countries biggest sport despite statistics (when it comes to TV at least) proving otherwise. I see little ability/willing of the NRL to challenge this perception and change it.

The NRL has to lay out its strategic plan and has to start winning the media war. Challenging times ahead.

Put the glasses down, as I will tell you now going by past history the NRL will do f*** a**.

So why don't we make it easier for AFL and get rid of more Sydney teams and make people even more pissed off with league that they will go and follow another sport. Remember Norths, I wonder what the 15,000 that use to watch them play at home are doing now?

Having 9 cover AFL in NSW and QLD is the best thing to happen to RL in years. Nine will have the AFL top games on at 2am after f**king Matlock specials or something. I find it amusing that the AFL would bother with the foremost leader in bad sports coverage in Australia.
