Cannings

I note that everyone has automatically put Aaron Cannings into their starting squads for next year. I wonder what that's based on? His few games for the Eels in NRL this year were very ordinary, best remembered for his poor handling.

With Paul Stringer signed and Cayless likely to move back to prop, I think Cannings is sure to come off the bench. I think he has the potential to do for Parra from Frank Pritchard was doing for Penrith before his injury. Coming in mid-way through the half and creating havoc.

He only played 2 and a bit games this year didn't he?

I'd have him on the bench with Vella, with Cayless and Stringer starting.

You may very well be right although I am unsure what they plan to do with the pack.

My pack would be:

Cayless Riddell Stringer
Hindmarsh Morrison
Wagon

Wags starts because of his workrate in defence...not much use as a utility. Cannings and Stringer are easily interchangeable though but I suspect Cannings would cause more havoc coming on after 15-20. I would also use Vella off the bench.

All the scenarios would work but Cayless would have to be there to start being captain.

I'd go back to Cayless and Vella starting, with Stringer and Cannings off the bench.

I actually think that Cannings offers a lot more value off the bench rather than in the starting side. He could provide the same impact off the bench that Mason offered during Origin.

I've given up on injury update, it's so unreliable its not funny.

Belly, I agree with you. Then add Widders and either Robinson or Jack A (personally I'd prefer Jack A but I'm sure they will have promised Robinson first crack at the spot).

Both Cayless and Cannings were meeting with doctors today to assess their injuries supposedly.

Cannings will be a star. I'm willing to be burned for this bold statement thats how much confidence I have in him. Still rough around the edges but all the good ones are when they're a bit green. We'll be holding him in Hindmarshesque esteem within 2 years. Big call I know but you watch...

I wouldn't compare him to Hindy but i agree with what you say. I really rate the guy. In the pre season he was training the house down. He is a monster bloke and is very quick for such a big fella. Having him next year will be like a new signing in its own.

Cannings is a great prop, one of the leagues best juniour prospects last season. Even with his poor handling at the start of the season he really stood up against that Bulldogs pack when everyone else was getting belted.

He's a freak. An athlete in a monsters body. You can't train that, it's a freak of nature. Watch him develop in the next 2 years and shut up all the doubters. They're built well in Wee Waa :D (although some may have head issues)

CAnnings just hasn't gotten enough game time to really get going in the Blue and Gold if he can get a few games late this year and have an injury free run in 2005 he'll be starting each game by the middle of '05.

Cannings will be a gun

he did have handling worries in his early games this year, but then again he was the main forward who was able to make consistent ground by just lumbering his huge frame forward and pushing through in tackles

he goes well and may come off the bench next year to begin with, but him and Stringer starting would be a great platform for Hindy, Cayless and Morrison to go wider and Vella and Robinson coming on after about 20 mins.....

I would have Stringer and Vella as starting props.

I don't think Wags defensive work rate is needed considering we'll have Morrison (just as good a worker) and Hindy (need I say anthing) and Cayless (was making 30 a game before injury) in the back row - oh, and that along with Morris at 5/8 (he's a compulsive tackler!!!)

I'd have

13. Morrison
12. Cayless
11. Hindmarsh
10. Vella
9. Riddell
8. Stringer

14. Widders
15. Afamasaga or [dummy half or playmaker]
16. Robinson or Tsoulos
17. Cannings

That's a monster starting pack with plenty of weapons on the bench to come on and cause some havoc!

Also can't wait for Cannings to come back this year - he really is quick for a big man, and his powerful hitups will give us momentum heading towards the semis!

Smithy has said he wants Morrision and Hindy on either side of the ruck, indicating they will both be playing second row.

Hey theres only one freak around here! ;-)

And Im not sure about the update on Cannings from yesterday but Cayless will probably sit the rest of the season out unfortunately.

PArra wouldnt be the same without Wagon. He defends the middle of the ruck and is so suited to lock. I admit as a 5/8 or utility he isnt at his best but without Wagon Hindy would be working twice as hard and being more innefecttive in attack
