Will he or won't he - The Lote Tuqiri Story

There are a lot of ironies in the Greatest Game of All.

In the 1994 Grand Final contested by Canterbury and Canberra, Raiders captain Mal Meninga came up with a very controversial play in the early stages when he hit Bulldogs captain Terry Lamb in a front-on tackle, bringing his heavily strapped forearm swiftly up into Lamb's jaw. The hit sent Lamb to Disney Land along with any hope Canterbury had of winning that day.

It was a sickening blow, and one that left the blue and white army crying foul. But, how does that Midnight Oil song go?

Short memory.

In 1988 Terry Lamb, playing in his second Grand Final, made an almost identical hit on Balmain five-eighth Ellery Hanley. The impact was felt in exactly the same way as Meninga's hit on Lamb six years later, leaving the Tiger's English import and chief playmaker to stumble about the field in a daze.

That was taken from the main page news... Is he a Balmain supporter?
THey just can't get over it

I ain't blaming the hit for our loss. We were going to lose it from the first drop ball in the first 10 seconds.

If the ball was caught, it would've been a tight game. Then again, might not have been, dogs may have smashed em, or canberra may have smashed us. We will never now.

Shit happens!!!

I have NEVER heard a Dogs player blame Mal... That game was Canberras from the start !!! THe point of the thread was to show Balmain supporters cant get over 1988!!! And have to bring up things (THe 1994 incident) which Bulldog supporters dont blame for the loss up to make there point! SAD!!!!!

You didnt even put up the full article, where the author says how he really respected Terry Lamb after that game, and how he led the dogs to victory in 95

Wow, i seem to remember a hit against a certain Balmain player that basically won the Dogs a GF.

I seem to remember St Georger losing back to back premierships against Brisbane and a penalty try for Melbourne against st George that sealed a premiership for the Storm.

What both the Bella knock-on and Scott Wilson’s being “jolted” (a kind description) of Stuart’s bomb by a charging Noa Nadruku reflect is Canterbury’s longtime policy of not playing specialist fullbacks, which had been club policy since Brentnall retired and Potter left. If Canterbury had recognised the value of a specialist, it would likely have been a 20 metre tap kick and they would have been out of trouble at nil all and who knows what would have happened then??

The Bulldogs had got away with playing a “third half” at fullback for a good decade beforehand. Michael Hagan, far too slow for fullback, was amazingly played there during 1987. In 1988, Jason Alchin, as small as Allan Langer and among the most injury-prone ever to play in the NSWRL, was a rarity in a converted fullback who could take bombs well (catching a brilliant one as Hanley charged him!), but Alchin wished to play halfback and shifted to St. George. Then Ewan McGrady, who was very fast but totally unsafe, was relegated to reserve grade because he wanted to play halfback but had no opportunity there, and the Bulldogs recruited the 1994 villain in Scott Wilson. Wilson had played almost all his first-grade career at fullback, but Steve Martin knew him totally unsafe under the bomb and when he played Wilson, Martin had Paul Conlon in the centres take the bombs.

Another big question about the 1994 Grand Final is what was Chris Anderson’s response and whether it really changed his policy of playing a “third half” at fullback?? Rod Silva was no champion, but he was certainly safer against Stuart than any inside back or threequarter (Matthew Ryan, Jason Williams) they put against him.
