Casualties for Storm against Sharks

Heres an article from Fox sports suggesting that three storm players will not be playing tonight:

"Storm trio in doubt
May 8, 2004

MELBOURNE halves Scott Hill and Matt Orford are in serious doubt for tonight's NRL clash with Cronulla at Olympic Park following last night's rugged City-Country Origin rugby league match.

Country centre Matt King (elbow) will definitely miss the match against the Sharks but should be back for next week's encounter with Parramatta.

Dustin Cooper will replace King in the centres.

Country five-eighth Hill (calf) and City halfback Orford (lower back) have complained of soreness after last night's bruising encounter and are in serious doubt to back up just 24 hours later.

If Orford is ruled out, Cameron Smith will wear the No.7 jersey and Nathan Friend will play hooker.

Matt Geyer will move into pivot if Hill doesn't play, with Cooper Cronk or Jake Webster on standby to come off an eight man bench into the starting line-up.

The loss of Hill and Orford would be a big blow to the Storm as the pair was superb for Country and City respectively last night.

Melbourne has not lost a match at Olympic Park under lights since 2000.

Meanwhile, fullback sensation Billy Slater today re-signed with the Storm for a further three years, keeping him at Olympic Park until at least 2007.

After bursting on to the NRL last year, Slater's electrifying pace and sublime footwork has placed him on the verge of Queensland State of Origin selection at the age of 20.

Originally from Innisfail in north Queensland, Slater admitted he was keen to repay the faith shown in him by Storm coach Craig Bellamy.

"I'm really happy here at the Storm and I hoped that I wouldn't be leaving and thankfully that is the case," Slater said.

"I do think I owe something to the club. Craig obviously gave me a start when I wasn't expected to play first grade and I think loyalty is a big thing.

"Hopefully I can stay at the club for even longer than what I have signed for."

The re-signing of Smith and Bellamy earlier this year heavily influenced Slater's decision to stay in Melbourne.

"You need a very good coach and a competitive side wherever you go and I think we've got that here," he explained.

"Craig signing for another three years definitely put me one step closer to re-signing with the club.

"And then after Cameron (Smith) and a few others signed, I thought that there were definitely a lot of positives here and I think the club will go a long way with the young talent it has coming through."

Bellamy believes Slater's re-signing will ensure the club maintains a competitive edge in years to come.

"He's very exciting to watch and players with his ability are fairly rare, so we're happy to keep him here for both the short and long-term," said Bellamy.

"Not only is he a good football player, and he's going to be better, but he's got that bit of personality that a club really needs."

Dont think so. I read on Sharks site that both Kimmorley and Stevens have pulled up well and are fit for tonight! Only problem was stitches for Stevens' nose, not a injury to keep him out.

"Sharks pair fit to tackle the Storm

Sharks pair of Brett Kimmorley and Jason Stevens came through last nights City-Country clash relatively unscathed and will be fit to take on Melboune at Olympic Park tonight.

Stevens copped a knock to the nose in the opening moments of the match, receiving a cut that required a couple of stitches, however the big front rower finished the game strongly and will be fine to take his place in the side for what shapes as an important match for the Cronulla side.

Both Stevens and Kimmorley played leading roles in the performances of their respective teams in Gosford, with Kimmorley's Country outfit scoring a late try to record a narrow 22-18 victory.

Combining perfectly with his five eighth Scott Hill, Kimmorley's play has thrown a cat amongst the pigeons as far as State of Origin selections go and has placed enormous pressure on Australian halfback Craig Gower in the lead up to the series kick off.

Likewise, Stevens was strong for City, more than holding his own against his younger front row rivals. If the NSW side is seeking a solid and experienced campaigner, Stevens would be the ideal choice.

For the Sharks today against the Storm, stand-by players Pat Gibson and Keith Galloway drop off the 7-man interchange bench, with Ryan McGoldrick making the trip to Melbourne as the 18th man.

The match will kick off at 7.30pm and will be shown live on Fox Sports."

Hopefully both the Melbourne 6 and 7 are out as we desperatly need all the luck we can get at the moment. Hopefully, with bails trying to push for an origin spot etc, we can step up and maybe come away with the 2 points... Heres to hoping.

Listening on Fox sports pre-game talk they did not mention Orford and Hill out so it will be interesting. Maybe they were unaware. We will find out in approximately 1 and a half hours!

I guess we could play Stevo off the bench if it really came down to it. Good news about Melbourne if it's true.
