Catalans sign Origin player

From Canberra Times
Canberra Raiders centre Adam Mogg received a shock State of Origin call-up yesterday, then dropped a bombshell of his own by revealing he had signed to play in France.

The Raiders granted Mogg a release yesterday morning, allowing the 28-year-old to sign a three-year deal with French Super League club Les Catalans.

Good signing for Catalans who are weak in the outside backs. But will he replace a current Aussie player. I hope so. Catalans need to keep a majority of French players in their side. They're chasing Roy Asotasi too. It would be bad to see French players missing out to even more overseas players.

From now on, all announcements relating to the signing of origin players should be pre-faced with 'NSW' or 'QLD.'

The idea that SL will one day trumpet the announcement of star QLD and broncos player David Stagg has shivers running down my spine.

Solid signing though.

A lot of Raiders fans have been saying how Mogg is now more a success as a winger than a centre? Perhaps he could be taking Justin Murphy's spot at Catalans, he's been around a long time...

Yeah if Catalans were looking to offload a player to bring Mogg in it would be Wilson on this year's performances. Wilson had one good game I think but has been ordinary otherwise. Maybe they've signed Mogg as a fullback. That was his original position and Catalans might see him in a more key role than centre or wing.

FRIDAY - 16th June 2006

The Catalans Dragons have confirmed the signing of 26-year-old utility player Casey McGuire.

The Australian, who currently plays for NRL club Brisbane Bronco’s, will come to the Catalans on a three-year contract.

McGuire, the former Queensland Sunshine Coast junior, is a State of Origin representative and has been described as a workaholic on the field.

He has played in almost every position in the back line, as well as at number nine and thirteen.

McGuire has played 103 NRL games, scoring a total of 25 tries for the Brisbane Bronco’s where he has been since 1998 after a short stint with the Parramatta Eels.

He was selected to play twice for Queensland during the 2005 State of Origin series.

Club CEO, Grant Mayer, said: “Casey adds the versatility that the club has been looking for in 2006.

“His experience at State of Origin level and with one of the premier teams in the NRL will help the Catalans Dragons develop further in 2007.

“Casey is a great young kid and his enthusiasm to play in Super League and live in the south of France tells us all he is coming to the club with a fantastic attitude.”

Mark Hughes has been pretty average as well, i wouldn't be surprised to see him go.
On another matter it's disappointing the Dragons missed out on Oliver Elima who re-signed with Wakefield as he would've been a great addition to the pack.

Casey McGuire is a very good signing for any club and after Wednesday night Mogg is looking like a brilliant signing. BUT will they take the place of French players? Hope not.

FFS, the amount of players leaving to play in the U.K has left the NRL with a massive player drain.

The ESL are much more of a threat than Union will ever be and until the ESL can cultivate their own players, the NRL and the international game are the big losers!

I'd rather see 100 NRL players go to the ESL than one go to union (unless that one was a disgrace to the game like a Hoppa or someone of that ilk).

In all fairness most of the overseas players are replacing other retiring or leaving ones. The amount of overseas players in ESL is about the same most years I reckon.
