Cats v Bulls

Watched the game last night, and while Les Cats were well beaten, some of the dismissive posts on another forum don't tell the whole story.

Yes, they dropped ball, and yes, they were caned with a capital C by Kirkpatrick, some of whose decisions were un-bloody-fathomable, but they did some good things.

Their defensive organisation was very good (yeah, yeah, I know, 54-6), they closed Bradford down a lot on numerous sets but were undone by penalties and Bradford's ability to offload against a tiring defence.

Fellous, who this time last year I was prepared to bag mercilessly, is now a superstar forward. He and Fakir were great, but Guisset at lock was an experiment that was meant to counter Bradford's size but which backfired.

However, I've said on numerous occasions that for all his skills Mounis is just too small. He's in danger of becoming an inbetween player, good in French championship but not able to cut it in SL.

Frayssinous is a great example of that. He was recalled yesterday and was hopeless again. Useless tackling and some poor handling errors.

Rudder provides no creativity, which is the Catalans' biggest drawback with ball in hand. Their French forwards plus Beattie do the job but Rudder and Dobson don't do much else.

The latter seems to be suffering from a crisis in confidence. The old cliche about a half not being able to perform behind a beaten pack doesn't register with yesterday's match. Dobson cannot take the line on (although v Hull he showed he has the pace to go the distance) and his kicking game goes from bad to worse. He squanders too, too many fifth tackle options with poor kicks.

Two of the Bulls first three tries came from kicks, and once Les Cats were beaten their heads dropped and the scores mounted, as is so often the case in RL.

Rinaldi, my favourite player, is now testing my patience. His dummy half play just aint as slick nas Berthezenes and the experiment of spelling the two of them isn't working. Rinaldi should get a go at or 6 and Rudder should be sacked.

Kirkpatrick really was that bad though.....

Kirkpatrick has been crap for the last few weeks on televised games. He seems to want to make himself the center of attention in the games, and should be dropped to the lower divisions for a few weeks IMO.

My girlfriend attended this game, and I'm waiting to get her report...

I know they've performed without Stacey, but his return will do wonders for their confidence and creativity . Maybe not enough to beat Bradford when they're on form, but to comepte for the 80 mins and not get disheartened?

He must be due back pretty soon, isn't he?

week after next i believe bartman.

i thought the dragons lacked direction. i really dont think bradford played that well, despite the score and some of the reffing/touchie calls were unforgivable at that level.
i also reckon that the dragons were having ' one of those days' .

look they played the current wcc champs, they are missing stacey greatly, it is also reported both guigne, saudoni are also injured. the first thing is a must get rid of rudder from 5/8, rinaldi to there. Look miracles cannot be expected look at the cowboys first year, how many out of there 1995 group made the cut one :paul bowman. catalan will take time & that is what they have will no relegation worries. the thing with catalan unlike the nz warriors players can stil earn a good crust in the elite if at the right clubs: toulouse, pia, limoux.

max gresque contract is big dollars with pia, & david ferriol the same at limoux, cedric gay at toulouse. so unlike nz warriors not all the best in france want to be at catalan, many stay with the big dollars at home or stay with the toulouse team which has big chance for sl 2009, on top of this proably france's best perfromed forward oliver elima is at wakefield while there best back coutier is @ hull kr and killing them last week named nl1 player of the week. so calalan represents a region not basically a nation like nz warriors, as toulouse have big aspirations.
the perfromance of the french youth team just getting beat 22 20 by england who have many boys under contract with the big sides, so that no doubt the talent will emerge.

Screeny, the main criticism of Rudder is that he is not creative, so why not put him as lock or second row?

I am not as critical as you of Mounis. I like him, though I am influenced by his performances in the Test vs Australia in 2004, and vs England in 2005.

I agree with you that Rinaldi is no hooker. He is a half back. If he has to be moved, then move him to five eighth. Berthezene was in sensational form against St Helens and especially against Hull, breaking the defensive line several times from dummy half. Against St Helens, had Hughes running off Berthezene not thrown a speculator and taken the tackle, one of the Berthezene breaks could have led to an important try.

When Stacey Jones returns as 7, it should be Rinaldi 6 and Berthezene 9.

As for Stacey Jones I met him briefly at the St Helens game (17th) and asked him when he would be back. He first said "I don't know." Then he paused and said "In about a month maybe." A little later after the game I repeated this to a second tier Catalans official (not a member of hte coaching staff, but in the office), and he said firmly "Oh no, he will be back May 6th." May 6 is next weekend against Warrington. So either he is back next week or in three weeks. I don't know, and I don't know who knows.

Why the coach chose Frayssinous when Bosc was injured I cannot understand. Guige must have been injured too. But I would have put Zitter at full back, where he has played a lot, rather than Frayssinous. Though Zitter has been embarassed by being outjumped when defending against the high ball kicked to the corner, by Matt Coooper (2005 Test against Australia) and Vinnie Anderson (vs St Helens), on both occasions leading to tries, those guys are superb at it. Frayssinous is taller than Zitter but Zitter's handling and tackling is better than Frayssinous' and he has excellent positional play. Potter needs to realise for himself now that Frayssinous is a totally lost cause.

Poor old Laurent, he must realise he's just not up to it and it can't be a good feeling.

Rudder to lock would work actually. Mounis does not like defending.

I just don't get, and never will, why Potter, and other coaches, select the teams they do. Dobson may be an Aussie Schoolboys champ but his halfback play seems plodding. I say seems as he might, for all I know, be the best organiser, play caller and reader of a match in the world!

But his kicking game is rubbish and I've not seen him break the line once. His set plays, such as second man plays are obvious when compared to when a Jones runs them. Rinaldi's dummy half play is obvious too, while Berthezene keeps things alive at the ruck and the markers in two minds. Rinaldi's attempted misdirection feints are merely beacons to the other side. He tends to step towards his runners too much as well.

Wilson and Hughes are both guilty of screwing up possession and if you go on performances alone there is a clear distinction arising in my book between the French and Australian players, although the excellent Beattie and the woeful Frayssinous buck that trend.

BUT! KK was dire, and like I said, I like Les Cats' team. They're good, despite 54-6. Whenever a team falls behind in RL they are bound to concede plenty more softer tries at the end.

One try was clearly out of bounds, two of the first three were from kicks and there were several other tries that stemmed from dodgy decisions either on that particular set or on a previous one in which the ref awarded some harsh penalty or other.

Plus there was plenty of dropped ball inside their own half that put the Frenchmen's defence under far too much pressure.
