Cup Favourites Fare Well At Barrier Draw18 October 2006
Wednesday morning's BMW Caulfield Cup barrier draw did nothing to dampen the chances of the favourite for the $2.5 million race with Sphenophta drawing barrier eight.
Champion AFL footballer Shane Crawford made Sphenophyta fans happy when he plucked the miniture Caulfield Cup with No 8 glued to the bottom to ensure the horse he part owns will start favourite in Saturday's Group 1 feature.
Sphenophyta will jump from barrier seven if there are no scratchings after third emergency Stormhill drew barrier one.
Part-owner John O'Neill was relieved to draw a good barier.
``He (Sphenophyta) is really well and to draw there is terrific,'' O'Neill said. ``The most important thing is to draw a good gate and we've done that, so now we'll leave it up to the captain and the coach (jockey Danny Nikolic and Freedman).''
The Turnbull Stakes winner was not the only fancied runner to draw well on Wednesday. Sphenophyta's stablemate and Turnbull Stakes runner-up Our Smoking Joe drew gate two, last Saturday's ultra-impressive Winning Edge Presentations Stakes winner Growl drew alongside Sphenophyta in nine, the other side of Sphenophyta will be defending champion Railings who drew seven, while Tawqeet and Activation, the first two horses home in the Metropolitan Handicap, drew barriers three and five respectively.
The news wasn't so good for Serenade Rose, who drew gate 15. Headturner was allocated barrier 18, while second emergency Zipping will start from the outside barrier if he gets run after landing gate 21.
