Cup Favourites Fare Well At Barrier Draw18 October 2006

Wednesday morning's BMW Caulfield Cup barrier draw did nothing to dampen the chances of the favourite for the $2.5 million race with Sphenophta drawing barrier eight.

Champion AFL footballer Shane Crawford made Sphenophyta fans happy when he plucked the miniture Caulfield Cup with No 8 glued to the bottom to ensure the horse he part owns will start favourite in Saturday's Group 1 feature.

Sphenophyta will jump from barrier seven if there are no scratchings after third emergency Stormhill drew barrier one.

Part-owner John O'Neill was relieved to draw a good barier.

``He (Sphenophyta) is really well and to draw there is terrific,'' O'Neill said. ``The most important thing is to draw a good gate and we've done that, so now we'll leave it up to the captain and the coach (jockey Danny Nikolic and Freedman).''

The Turnbull Stakes winner was not the only fancied runner to draw well on Wednesday. Sphenophyta's stablemate and Turnbull Stakes runner-up Our Smoking Joe drew gate two, last Saturday's ultra-impressive Winning Edge Presentations Stakes winner Growl drew alongside Sphenophyta in nine, the other side of Sphenophyta will be defending champion Railings who drew seven, while Tawqeet and Activation, the first two horses home in the Metropolitan Handicap, drew barriers three and five respectively.

The news wasn't so good for Serenade Rose, who drew gate 15. Headturner was allocated barrier 18, while second emergency Zipping will start from the outside barrier if he gets run after landing gate 21.

i read a report this morning where Lloyd Williams has said if there is only one scratching, then he could scratch Activation to allow Zipping to run

i'd be a big fan of that

i want Zipping in the Caul Cup and Activation in the Melb cup

Be surprised if that happens though. Don't they need a vet certificate to scratch? Read that somewhere...

I like Railings and Serenade Rose. Probably Railings over SR. But I can't get over how short Sphenophyta is. Won buggerall and up against some top horses.

i've finally narrowed it down to 4 (5 if zipping starts)

might quinella/trifecta them with a couple of others in for third and see how i go

and my top pick may not be decided until tomorrow just before the race

well i've fast tracked my decision

i'm going with SPHENOPHYTA. has been ultra impressive since joining Frredmans stable and he'll have him right on target for this. drops to 50kg, drawn well, 4th up this prep will have room for improvement. looks a great hope. i'll be on him.

also, ACTIVATION. is hard fit for this after his last 2 starts over 2400m. should have won the Metrop but got too far back and the winner had a great run. he'll settle much closer this start after finally drawing a good barrier, and i expect him on the rails, or one-off, midfield. if he produces the same sprint as he did in the Metrop, he'll be flying

other chances are OUR SMOKING JOE and GROWL. as well as about 10 others.

Spring is definately here!

tough race, i can't believe how short spehnophyta is as well. Good horse but in this quality field, no thanks

I'm going to box 4: Railings (why is it so rough?), Grand Zulu (see railing comments), Headturner and Our Smoking Joe

Good luck!

What a horrible race to tip that one was! I was just going $5 for a place on two value horses - ended up being Tawqeet and Pop Rock... still a nice little collect but the horrible thing was I had a slip all filled out for $5 on Delta Blues (my fave style of music ) but thought it was too much of a long shot!

Awesome ride by Tawqeet. I should've grown some balls and put it on the nose. That'll teach me.

I never bet e/w let alone place......
But if it run 2nd you'd be happy you put it on for the place......
I'm not sure if it was an awesome ride but it was good.
At the top of the turn he chose the wrong decision and ran into a brick wall but the horse was good enough to regroup from that and win.
