Central Coast Bears NRL Bid.

I was just gonna comment on the possible move of the Mariners.

It's a real curveball, and could end up leaving the Central Coast stadium as a big white elephant with no permanent tenant.

If the relocated football team move to Brookvale, I guess the grounds owners (the council?) could use it as justification for more upgrades.. possibly ENTRENCHING Manly there.

Careful what you wish for.....
If they use Brookvale, it’s great for Manly. It highlights the need for a good rectangular stadium in Sydney’s North and boosts Manly’s bargaining power for infrastructure upgrades.

On Manly’s name and a rebranding to cover both the Northern Beaches and North Shore, a generic ‘Northern’ name didn’t work last time, it pleased no one and angered fans from both parties. It would work far better if Manly dropped Warringah from the club’s name and adopted branding that acknowledges both regions, e.g. something along the lines of Manly-North Shore Sea Eagles. Warringah doesn’t even really exist as an area or locality anymore with the amalgamation of the three Northern Beaches councils.

Then their licence should be revoked and given to the Pirates. The pettiness and selfishness of Manly's fans has held the game back for 20 years. It's time to stop pandering to these brats and treat them with the apathy they have for the game.

Adelaide and Perth are more important than Manly's 8k supporters.

It’s not Manly’s fans grimly hanging onto the hope of another NRL berth, stifling the game’s progress on the North Shore while 20 years go past. There’s just no point in the Bears’ existence anymore, nor is there any point in having 8-9 NRL clubs in Sydney if there isn’t one representing Northern Sydney (not a hodge podge Eastern Suburbs plus Northern Sydney arrangement, a Northern Sydney team). It’s time to hand that district over to current NRL teams, set development KPIs and have them go to work.

Tbf it wasn’t given enough time to see if the brand change could be successful. It started off pretty strongly. It’s hard to see rl fans of the northern suburbs plus gosford getting behind a club called manly, too much baggage. But we don’t want to lose the manly fans either, it’s a conundrum for sure!

I agree with this 100%. Manly can be that team, but it will need to become the North Sydney Sea Eagles and take over the Bears' catchment.

Manly will never drop the "Manly" from the name, honestly I can't remember a time where someone ever calls them the Sea eagles. Maybe once or twice but Manly is their brand. If Manly were to take over the ex Bears area I would follow what @reinimate suggested and drop the Warringah middle name for either Norths or North shore etc.. The Manly name is too strong to be changed.

This sort of backwards thinking is why Sydney is a dog's breakfast and is killing the game.

It's not that that off-kilter a suggestion. When St George and the Illawarra Steelers formed the joint venture, they didn't go for a generic 'Southern Dragons' style name, Illawarra was added to the St George brand to make the St George Illawarra Dragons. St George was the far more recognised brand and it maintained the ability to call the merged team the Saints/St George/the Dragons while spreading their reach.

@ash the bash is right, 'Manly' is just as much the team's brand as the Sea Eagle mascot. Going the way of the Dragons, maintaining the Manly brand and adopting a dual name scheme like Manly-North Shore (instead of Manly-Warringah) would go down far better with the existing base than throwing it out for a more generic North name. The Bears have been gone for 20 years now, building on the existing Manly identity and base is a better idea than throwing it out again.

Why would a person who lives north of the harbour, but not on the Northern Beaches, want to support a team named after a tiny suburb it has no affiliation with?

I wouldn't support them.

St George should change their name to Southern Sydney Dragons. It would make them far more lucrative to sponsors.

North Sydney Sea Eagles, or even Northern Sydney Sea Eagles, will appeal more to international companies and interstate fans.

sydney teams just want to represent a 2km radius.

God you're full of shít, nothing is killing the game, if anything its thiving, the metrics that you focused on are wrong, its become a TV game from 2000s onward, and post SL war forcing teams to be either be merged/culled hurt the game, and loss of key areas and clubs left a bad stain on the game, i feel if we continue to try to rationalize the game, we'll restart the cycle of hate, we need to expand without affecting the current clubs.
Look at how RU rationalized their code, then booted western force, its done nothing for union in Aus

You think there's another 4 spots available to accommodate relocating Roosters to Adelaide, adding Pirates to Perth, NZ 2 plus Brisbane 2 and Brisbane 3. I don't see any evidence of the Roosters ever relocating or the ARLC adding another 4 teams. The best we can hope for is a couple of struggling Sydney teams relocating to Adelaide and Perth after bringing in Brisbane 2 and NZ 2.

Some Sydney teams just do not draw strongly on TV and cannot pull a crowd. They're the clubs holding the game back, as they're preventing the ARLC from adding another 2 teams in Brisbane that will add a few thousand extra viewers, which will boost the value of the TV rights. Melbourne Storm have added a huge increase of viewers for blockbuster games, so there's no reason to think Adelaide and Perth cannot achieve the same if they're given teams of their own.

Tv ratings will change when a different set of dominant clubs emerge, example is if parramatta start to nose dive their ratings will too, at the moment Penrith are leading the comp, so their ratings will climb as more fans start to tune in.
Its all dependant on form, St.George and Gold Coast are climbing as Newcastle and Wests are sliding, its only round 5, and in another 3 seasons the metrics you used will be useless, as any of the 16 clubs will climb or faulter depending on their rosters, and form.
No one tunes in when you have a crap timeslot and aren't in form, so Gold Coast are a good barometer to gauge off as they were perianal losers, now the better QLD club and exciting to watch, not long ago there was calls here on this forum to relocate or boot them out, or give the bears the licence....
Seriously the dumb ideas here, no one is getting culled, licenses aren't finite, and lack of talented player depth is a myth, giving more players a chance to play in their local area, instead of moving elsewhere to get a shot is far better for the game to grow than the hoarding going on at a club like brisbane

I'd love to have 20 or more teams, but I cannot see it happening. Abdo spoke about a 17th and 18th team. There was no mention of a 10th game. Foxtel is broke and Ch9 only want 3 games a week. All games on Foxtel are in a unique tineslot, so a 9th and 10th game will probably be as well. It'll be hard to see how they can fit another 2 games into the current schedule.

Manly have drawn shit crowds and ratings for years, even when they were winning premierships. They just don't have many fans.

Correct on all points.

In fact using the RU example, rationalisation worked so poorly that they have since brought the Force back because neither Foxtel or 9/Stan would touch the sport without a larger audience.

Force were the only RU team in Perth. Sydney has 9 RL teams.

Why are you against Manly becoming the North Sydney Sea Eagles or Northern Sydney Sea Eagles?

Having North Sydney in its name doesn't make it the Bears. It can still be 100% owned by the Sea Eagles and based out of Brookvale.

Then why bother with just a name change, it doesn't solve the catchment issue, nor will it get people who live in the north shore or hornsby area interested in the sea eagles
