"GREAT DEFENCE MARKS ROCKHAMPTON TRIAL
The Manly Sea Eagles showed great committment in defence with a strong 34-12 win over the Central Queensland Comets at Rockhampton on Saturday night.
Manly kept the Comets scoreless until the final 10 minutes of the trial which featured mostly new players who will make up the Sea Eagles Premier League side in 2004.
Forwards Phil Moorwood,Kane Cleal,Nick Paterson,Nathan Hollingsworth and Glenn Stewart impressed while Jordan Macey,Paul Stephenson,Mark Lennon,J.P.Cherry,Jared Taylor and Darren Peachey had strong games in the backs.
Macey scored two tries from fullback and Taylor showed great speed to score a 60 metre try.Manly dominated the trial from the opening quarter with coaches Geoff Toovey and Dennis Moore delighted by the strong defence.
"It was strong throughout-well structured and a good starting point for the season,"Toovey said.
Manly were outgunned by the Comets in the corresponding match last season and were surprised by the improvement in the Sea Eagles.
The Comets trialled 30 players and were happy with their performance before a good crowd.
Injuries to forwards Jarrod Heaney and Nathan Tutt marred the trial.
Both will undergo x rays today for suspected broken hands and will be out of action for a month.
In other trial news from the weekend Manly played a 20 all draw with Wests Tigers in Flegg (under 20's) and beateen Central Coast Rip eight tries to one in SGBall and four tries to two in Matthews Shield.
Manly will play Parramatta in all grades exceept NRL at Brookvale Oval on Saturday,February 14 with the Matthews Shield game starting at 1 p.m."
