CEOs: Let's change jersey numbers

It was meant to be the chief executives meeting that decided upon the future of the NRL's salary cap.

Instead, the biggest development to come out of the meeting revolves around player's jersey numbers.

The five club CEOs involved – South Sydney's Shane Richardson, the Roosters' Steve Noyce, Brisbane's Bruno Cullen, Newcastle's Steve Burraston and Canberra's Don Furner – all supported the salary cap as it stands, despite the controversy caused by the Melbourne Storm scandal and the looming departure of Bronco Israel Folau to rugby or the AFL.

"We are all working within the cap and we all want to find the best ways forward but, in the end, it comes down to how much the clubs can afford to spend," Richardson said.

"We are not talking about one or two 'poorer' clubs but the majority."

The only real change suggested by the CEOs was to remove the current system whereby player jersey numbers reflect their position.

Such a move would allow Jarryd Hayne, for example, to decide against wearing the fullback's No.1, and instead choose any number he wished – No.23, say – and keep that number throughout his career.

It's a model used in the AFL, European football and American sports, and – importantly for the CEOs – could lead to a significant merchandising boost for clubs and players.

"It allows fans to identify with a favourite player when they are at the game and when they purchase a jersey," Roosters boss Steve Noyce said.

"The way positions are today, the numbers do not really reflect where people actually play and there is a chance for people to better identify with their favourite player.

"There are only two sports that retain numbers based on position and it is time we moved on."

Cannot disagree with that idea, would be great for marketing. There's no real negative for this kind of idea unless you're a nitpicker.

Bring in a proper independent commission and keep these numbskulls away from the decision making.

That is the dumbest sh!te I have heard in a while.

Why can't they sell Parra jerseys with a "1" on them, or hell, bring back names on jerseys.

Honestly some of the CEOs live in Imagination land...

i brought this up (again) only a couple of weeks ago.

the game needs to explore every new opportunity and viable revenue stream, although, it isnt really a new concept. this has been tapped by just about every professional comp in the world. Wasnt that long ago that soccer teams even submitted team sheets with players numbered 1-11.

The financial benefits for adopting it outweigh the status quo.

but its alarming that a forum to discuss the salary cap brought about no new initiatives for player payments. they probably spent 5 mins on the topic..............all there for the catered lunch i assume.

Ok, clubs can't afford a rise in the cap.

BUT

why not discuss the merits of changes to the system by which we pay players with an eye towards the next TV deal?

They create these commitees but they do nothing.

What a bunch of absolute dickheads. I don't think that they could get any worse even if they were on the AFL payroll. :fist:

I agree with the jersey thing. The new jerseys could have player names and numbers on them, and they stay the same the whole time.

If a problem is that the game and clubs have no money, there's no way you could say that it wouldn't help. Fans would encouraged to buy new jerseys when they get new favourite players etc.

Hmm so the CEOs that said the cap is okay will have no qualms about losing juniors etc to other clubs, as their is no dispensation for them?
:sarcasm:

At the very most this wouldn't be bad except it takes a sponsor off the jumper. But players pickin their numbers??? "big Willie Mason, what a year this little number 7 has had". Doesn't have the same ring to it
