CEOs: Let's change jersey numbers

Should players be allowed to chose their own jersey number?

I personally prefer the traditional system.

But if clubs feel this is a way they can make substantially more money then i think it would be foolish not to explore it.

I am at a loss to understand how they would make more money out of it. You would have to see a sh*tload of jerseys to make it worthwhile, and TBH the team is the important factor in deciding to buy a jersey.

Only way i could think is to tap into the market of people who have Lebron James,David Beckham,Lionel Messi jersey's.

To be honest i am not sure if this market is big enough for the change. But if it can be proven that say a personalized Jarryd Hayne or Billy Slater jersey could sell way more Jersey's to casual fans then just a regular football jersey then the avenue must be explored.

Then it is probably worth the change as long as they keep jersey number for rep games traditional.

I'm all for keeping the rep games traditional.

But for clubs bring this on. Watch the jersey sales grow, and give a cut of the profit to the players as way of upping their salary.

Hayne sells 10k jerseys, gets $10 from each of them, bam there's an extra 100k for one of our showpiece stars.

Same with Benji, Thurston, Inglis, Slater etc.

Player Behaviour
Game Day Experience
Food Prices and grounds
New Revenue Streams

Idiot. That's precisely what they're doing. Personalised numbers would be a new revenue stream.

Please correct me if I'm showing my age but don't you buy the jerseys without the numbers? This was the case with the last jersey I bought 3 years ago. You then put the numbers on later (if you so desire) depending on who is your favourite player or your position. Right? And each number right now and in the future will be a combination of 0-9.

So how do they keep track of this? Are they going to keep track of the individual numbers that are sold to put on blank jerseys and then forward the money to the players?:crazy::crazy:

No. Each jersey of each player will come with the number already on it. This will dramatically increase production costs and so cost to the consumer.

The only winners in this will be jersey manufacturers.

Why doesnt every CEO get together and do a deal to sell a bulk sponsorship deal with a major multi national for Goal Post Pads and Corner posts.

I reckon Coke or someone would pay shit loads to get this signage at 148 games a year, more than shitty little local brands can afford.

I reckon it would be worth $3 M a year, about 200k each club, i bet newmans motor group doesn't pay that

If the AFL can sell jerseys with personalised numbers and have them much cheaper than an NRL jersey without numbers., we should be able to find a way without anyone going broke.

Serious question, is there a market for 10k Hayne jerseys? I doubt it, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

To be honest I think adding player names would be a better idea. Then you'd have older jerseys with player names and positions they used to play having vintage value and proving that you've long been a supporter of a particular player, not just since the new fans jumped on the bandwagon. Are there hipster league fans?

The only jerseys I can see selling more than 10k for a single player would be for a superstar who put in a heroic rep performance consistently over a decent amount of time, ala Joey Johns or Darren Lockyer.

And $100k less for the club.

Do you really think 10k EXTRA people would by a Parra jersey with #23 if Hayne wore it than a Parra jersey with #1 if Hayne wore it?

Stupid question. Obviously you do...........

And why keep the rep games traditional? Obviously if it works in club games, it would work in rep games?

I'm pretty sure you buy a blank tank top and put a number on it after that. If you didn't you would be a prize goose.

Just checking now a Rabbitohs 2011 jersey costs $170. A Swans jersey costs $110 dollars. In case you're too dumb to realise, sleeves don't cost $60 to make.

With the AFL you pay an extra $10 to get whatever number you like.

We could do the same.

I'd be happy to see numbers changed if there was some uniform consistency across seasons. None of this 8 different jerseys in a season and changing them every 12 months.

And a player cannot change number more than once in X number of seasons unless they change clubs and there is a conflict.

Maybe making them more affordable would help as well, $100 for kids, $150 for adults is ludicrous. Who wants to pay that much for something that's worn for a season?

I haven't bought an Eels jersey since 2002, and I received the centenary one as a gift.

They do if the vest costs $110

We could do the same without your stupid "let the players pick" idea.

I still cant see how kids wouldsuddenly rush out to by an Inglis jumper is he decided he was going to wear #5 instead of #4.

Those that want it obviously cannot tell the difference between players. I guess for them there is a big chance of mistaking Dave Taylor for Chris Sandow, Fiu Fiu Moi Moi for Luke Burt and Sam Thaiday for Peter Wallace.

Here's a hint. Buy a copy of Big League - they have a key in each edition cleverly listing the names of players wearing each numbered jersey. You open it up to the Brisbane team list, look at No. 6, and then discover that it's Darren Lockyer. Difficult I know -which is why AFL dont use that system - but by completing high school it is reckoned that most people can work it out. IN fact, even Queensland have been using the system successfully for decades!

Failing that, ask your carer for help.

Those that dont want it obviously cannot tell the difference between the positional play of a forward from a half, or a winger from a dummy half.

Many pro sports leagues which incorporate personalised player numbers offer the same match info publications.

But I suppose it's great for your carer that the positional numbering system remains in use. They get the weekend off.

I think the jersey should have the names, numbers and positions of the players. Like this:

Minichiello
----1----
Fullback

or

Pearce
---7---
NSW Halfback

Waerea-Hargreaves
----14----
Bench

like that, so you know what position they play
