Should players be allowed to chose their own jersey number?

I have been pushing for this for a number of years. It looks like others are starting to jump on the bandwagon.

When (if) the Independent Commission gets up and running it should one of the first moves they make.

Yes. Do it. You can then put names on there as well. Not to the extent of SL where any number was used. But like the ESL way of the 1-25 in the squad numbered

they tried it in 97. it didnt work

want Inglis's jumper go buy a lol@soufs jersey and get a 3 on it
It was 97...hardly the best year to go by. And tried for 1 year is BS.

You have to back it properly.

As for Inglis. His current number has nothing to do with him. Anyone who plays his position gets the number. It would be a waste of money.

That's the difference between positional numbers and personalised numbers. I don't think some of you nuffys comprehend that.

Really, I thought they just got allocated a jersey number based on their number in the squad/in order of appearance?

Like they dont get to choose, the top team is still 1-17, and there isnt any 99's running around?
No, clubs name a 25-man squad at the start of the season. Some clubs give numbers to juniors that are outside of the 25 but are still part of the first grade squad, while others just give these players numbers if they are called up to play. Equally mid-season signings are just added on to the next available number. The numbers have to go consecutively, so you don't end up with stupid numbers like 99, and usually the numbers denote standing within the squad (for example the first choice 5/8 will be given number 6, interchange props will be given 15-16 etc). However, there are a couple of players who like to have their own number. For example, Jamal Fakir of Catalans always wears no 22, Ryan McGoldrick wears 23, David Solomona wears 26 etc. An NFL style system with players wearing 0-99 would be stupid, but the system used in Super League is much better than the 1-17 IMO.

The numbering system used in the game is based on position. Positions that are based on the formation of the scrum. In the early days of the game when we had 60 or more scrums each match then you could undertsand this. Plus in those days you had no interchange or injured players being replaced. You started the game with players numbered 1-13 and you finished the game with players numbered 1-13. A fullback wearing #1 (or #13 as it once was) played the whole game as a fullback. Back then numbers told you what position the player played and played for the whole game. But those times are well and truely passed.

In todays game with injured players being replaced and mutliple interchanges allowed it leads to some players playing a number of different positions during a game. A player wearing #4 could start the game playing centre, but end up playing a number of different positions. So why have a numbering system based on position.

And what about interchange players who wear numbers 14-17. Can someone tell me what position #15 plays?

I will use Dave Taylor as tthe example here. Lets say he is given #90 to wear at Souths. While ever he plays with the Rabbitohs that is his number. No matter what position he plays or even if he doesn't play in a game. No other player during Taylors time at Souths can wear that number. The #90 identifies Taylor not the position he plays.

Taylor fans can buy a Souths jumper and have the #90 on the back and know that are showing their support for Taylor.

Wouldn't be too bad.
Could retire the numbers of great players from the club to honour them.

Why don't we just change Australia's name to the United States of Australia while we're at it?

this cannot happen, otherwise us nuffies who follow the game wont be able to tell which player is playing in which position. you see, only morons watch rugby league, and it needs to be explicitly indicated to us that player x is playing on the wing because he wears #2 or #5. we possibly cant workout for ourselves that the two dudes who generally line up on the edges are in this position, the guys generally inside them are the centres, that the two big brutes carting the ball up and defending in the middle are props, or the fella's position who is regularly at the playball is dummy half. No, we're absolute fugwits and need to be shown this in some way.

Firstly, this notion that just because the US does something then we can't is petulant and childish. Secondly, it's not just US sports, AFL does it, Soccer all over the world does it.

There are numerous advantages to personalised numbers and zero real disadvantages.

I haven't heard one good reason why it shouldn't happen. And no "america does it" doesn't count as a good reason not to do it, same as "we're too dumb to know people's positions".

I have no problem with players having their own numbers and name on the back of the jersey. I would rather see clubs have better sale of merchandise/jerseys from this, rather than having to modify their jersey designs every 3 years or so.

For the traditionalists - I would say the rep football would keep the current number system for positions to avoid players of the same number having to choose another number.

Overall a win - win situation.

".

ok so the sportstore orders 20 of each players jersey then? "we don't have any inglis ones but can i interest you in a sutton jersey?".

what do you do if you make x amount of a players jersey (e.g. Snowden) who then announces he's leaving at the end of the year? how many do you think you're going to sell? That English club Mason went to is now elft with a shitload of jersey's with mason's name and number on them, how many people are gonna buy them?

fans associate players by their numbers anyway, the bigger players are well known by their numbers, f**k me even players of the past are referred to by their numbers. when they talk about the parra 7 they're not talking about jeff robson

even players have stuck by the traditional numbers when given the opportuinty and thurston has talked about wearing the 6 for qld, because of the meaning behind wearing the 6.

the argument that "i wont wear a jersey with a number on it because other people don't know that Slater is #1 for melbourne" is ridiculous. if some nuffie who doesnt follow league doesnt know who wears number 6 for wests then who the f**k cares?

All stupid reasons. If Thurston wants to wear 6 under this system, NOONES STOPPING HIM.

And your silly suggestion about shops struggling with this. How about you give them some credit. They're not as dumb as you. Do you really think shops guess when they order inventory? They can make pretty good educated guesses about how much of everything will sell. They obviously won't order as many "Sutton 50" jerseys as they would "Inglis 23".

Will they sometimes have more of what they need? Yes that's the nature of business, but there'll also be plenty of times where they sell out and have to make 2nd and 3rd orders.

Fmd...all the reasons against personalised numbers are dumb, but "shops will order too many of some" is as dumb as it gets.
