Wigan 16 - 10 UTC Att: 5,906
UTC would have won if the game was in France. I have word from a Wigan fan who attended that a scandalous decision to award a try to Wigan on about 70 minutes robbed the French of a win. He says a Wigan player was clearly over the dead ball line when he 'scored' but it was ignored by the officials. He said UTC have some top level players, particularly Berthaneze (SP?) the hooker who he says could match anyone in the UK and Fakir who dominated in the pack.
St Helens 62 - 0 York Knights Att: 6,640
York tried hard but it was always an uphill struggle, despite very impressive performances from the York half backs. This would have been a record score had Saints not bombed so many chances.
The game was totally overshadowed though by the protests against the imminent sacking of Ian Millward. The fans were 100% behind Millward and let the board, particularly Sean McGuire know how they felt. Constant chanting in support of Millward continued throughout the game and with about 20 to go a swarm of fans stormed into the blcok of seating housing the Directors and press box. This resulted in security being out numbered, but thankfully the protests were kept to a very vocal but ultimately peaceful protest, which as I left at 10.30 was still ongoing. There were thousands still in the ground as I left.
Sean McGuire's days must surely be as numbered as Millward's are. He received a lot of very personal abuse tonight, with the majority of supporters clearly singling him out as the main hate figure in the pathetic back stabbing of Ian Millward.
