Are you guys talking about Alan Thomas? He hasn't called football for years before last night. Formerly Channel 9 news reader in Brisbane, he used to call the Origins in Queensland with former Australian front rower Mick Vievers. It was a one eyed call but growing up and you knew nothing else you thought it was great.
Qld used to have them calling the games while NSW had Darrell Eastlake and Jack Gibson (before Ray Warren returned to Channel 9 in 1991). There was also a couple of years where Channel 10 had the rights and had Graeme Hughes and former Balmain coach Billy Anderson (now works in a betting agency).
When Ray Warren took over Alan kept reading the sports for a while until he went to race calling. Not involved in the horses but from the little I know he is a well respected race caller.
And remember most football callers begin life as race callers.....Ray Warren, Ray Hadley, and even Andrew Voss I think?
He sounded like the greatest caller ever last night purely because he was sitting next to Walters and Ikin. Somebody should explain to them the rules (eg. the Berrigan no try) and they should take off their Broncos glasses. Brisbane play a very unattractive brand of football and the way they are going will struggle to make the 8 this year.
