Did anyone else feel that the Channel 9 commentators, in particular Andrew Johns and Ray Warren were getting carried away with Shaun Johnson. I found it hard to believe that they were using words like 'superstar' in relation to arguably one of the most inconsistent and limited halves in the NRL. Its almost as if they had forgotten all of his mediocre performances over the past couple of seasons and how he only produces his best footy every now and then. Even at his best, I feel that he lacks the structure and vision in his game to be a top class half. I just feel that tonight was an example of an average player having a really good game.

He is a hell of a lot better a player than Benji and as I recall they were calling him 'worlds best player', image the hype machine if a high profile sydney club could snare him

Does anyone else feel this wasn't worth starting a thread over? Kid is talented. Commentators got overly excited. Not worth complaining about.

So of course a souths half who rides the cot tails of inglis, burgess boys and issac luke is better no doubt.

Jaryd Hayne in Origin didn't do half the things Johnson did tonight but no-one (especially Haynetrain lol) were complaining about that Jizzfest

Johnson plays behind probably the softest pack in the comp. Old mate Reynolds would be playing bush footy by now if he was trying to create plays with no space week in week out. Put Johnson behind your pack and he does for you what he did for the a Kiwis in the games against Australia.

as a tigers fan, he is dominating benji's efforts on the international field, he now just needs a world cup win.

at club level, he's pretty good but a bit inconsistent just like his entire team.

I can think of quite a few teams with far softer packs than the Warriors! i.e. Dragons and he is still highly inconsistent and limited in abilities. He played behind a pretty good pack tonight and while he had a good game I don't buy into all this hype around him. As for Johnson doing the same at Souths, there is no way that he would cut it at Souths because he doesn't have the vision/structure in his game to succeed at a club which plays a highly organised style of footy. Johnson is pretty much good from broken footy or second phase play; in other words ad-lib footy. I think his abilities were exaggerated by Tim Sheens' lack of a plan to shut him down. He should have adopted an approach that alot of teams did to shut down Benji Marshall - let him dance across field and slide across with him. Cut of his options out wide; basically shepherd him into touch.

To be fair I didn't think New Zealand as a whole were that good; we were just poor. Tim Sheens didn't make best use of the players around him. New Zealand played like a typical Stephen Kearney side - with very little structure or any noticeable method to their attack. It was their forwards who won the game for them - if anything the commentators should be blowing their loads of Jason Taumalolo rather than Johnson. He was their best player for mine.

In fairness that game was probably only the third time Rabbits has seen Johnson play.

Joey likes to think he discovered Johnson so will talk him up all day. Rabs mentions anyone with an Anglo name 57% more often because it saves doing a bit of research. The less said about Wally the better.

He deserves the hyperbole around him because when he does something good it's very very good and fantastic to watch. Kicking a bomb? The way Johns was going on you'd think Johnson was the first person in history to kick a football.

I don't see what the problem is. Johnson pulled off some incredible plays that probably won NZ the four nations. I've been a pretty vocal detractor of Johnson and i still think his career has been very average considering his incredible talent (he could be the best player in the game). However when he's on song there are few better and i don't mind the commentators talking him up.

Anyway for International league it's a nice change from the constant negativity.

He is a hell of a lot better a player than Benji and as I recall they were calling him 'worlds best player', image the hype machine if a high profile sydney club could snare him

I don't know that this is true. People like to forget but Benji was pretty damn good at his best and he did go on to win a premiership and a world cup. It's easy to hate on him now and call him sh*t but he wasn't always.

I can understand inconsistent... But limited??

He's not limited... He's got speed and footwork... he can pass long and short... He can kick long and short as well as bomb... He's not a spot in the defensive line anymore... And he's brilliant cover defender also.

And he certainly has vision... Proof of which is the amount of intercepts he gets.

The guy isn't limited... He's just inconsistent...

I wouldn't even call him inconsistent. He always does his job. He's just spectacular when those around them do their job as well. He's also proven he can do the job of both halves, as long as the 5/8 stays out of the way and lets Johnson do his work.
