Dragons Name Squad For Charity Shield
Tue 14th February, 05:00PM
A A

The St George Illawarra Dragons have named a 20-man squad for the annual Charity Shield fixture against the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Sunday, 19th February at ANZ Stadium.

Skipper Gareth Widdop, Josh Dugan, Tyson Frizell, Jason Nightingale and Russell Packer have all been named to play their first football for the Dragons in 2017.

New recruit and World All Star Paul Vaughan will also play his first football for the Dragons against South Sydney.

After playing at the Auckland Nines, fellow recruits Cameron McInnes and Nene Macdonald have earned their first 80-minute game at the Red V.

Dragons assistant coach Ben Hornby believes the squad named is close to the club’s best considering injured players such as Mose Masoe are still unavailable for selection.

"This is close to our best squad at the moment, the coaching staff thinks," Hornby said.

"While we'll still going to give some guys some opportunities to impress, it'll be close to our starting side. This trial is more about getting those combinations going before the season starts.

"It'll be a good start for the boys to get into competition-mode. We're looking forward to it and I'm sure the Rabbitohs are too."

Hornby was also impressed by the Dragons’ 20-10 trial win over the Wests Tigers last Saturday at WIN Stadium, Wollongong.

"It was a good first hit-out,” Hornby said.

"I thought we played fairly well. We had a bit of a slow start which is probably to be expected in your first game.

"We were good enough to come over the top of them so it was pretty pleasing overall."

Charity Shield Squad:

Leeson Ah Mau, Euan Aitken, Jack de Belin, Josh Dugan, Jai Field, Tyson Frizell, Jacob Host, Tim Lafai, Nene Macdonald, Kurt Mann, Will Matthews, Cameron McInnes, Josh McCrone, Taane Milne, Jason Nightingale, Russell Packer, Tariq Sims, Joel Thompson, Paul Vaughan, Gareth Widdop.

field better be starting in the halves. Surely supercoach won't play Mcrone ever again. kurt mann at fullback

So what do we read into this? Is Mary going with four forwards on the bench? Or is McCrone or Field going to be a bench utility?

I think because it is a trial they can have more than a four man bench

I'd like to think Field at 7or 6,McCrone on the bench to cover half /hooker.

Based on this list, I'd expect a lineup of

Dugan
MacDonald
Aitken
Milne
Nightingale
Mann
Widdop
Ah Mau
McInnes
Vaughan
Frizell
Thompson
DeBelin

Field
Packer
Sims
Host
McCrone
Lafai
Matthews

But hey, who knows what Mary's going to do.

No Havilli or luciano

I think almost as strong as we can name. But I am disappointed with no Havili. This guy just doesn't get the recognition and opportunities I think he deserves. I can imagine him playing against us in future years and causing mayhem. Maybe Mary is looking to McCrone on the bench to cover hooker and half.

Aside from Havili and depending who's 1-13, 14-17 and 18-20, it seems close to our best. I do not want to overstate the case but it adds to my view that Mary (maybe with some help) is getting more things right so far this year. Some might say that would not be hard. Others might think I am 'tripping'. Must consult Glenn 01 on that score!

If Mary is picking the side for round 1 then it will likely be mccrone at 7 and maybe Field or Mann on the bench.

If Coynes picking it then maybe he goes with Mann in the halves somewhere with mccrone on the bench to cover hooker.

Much depends on how Field handles his first proper hit out.

Wow this is interesting. Has he ever named just four forwards on the bench? In my recent memory he has always named a utility, either Marketo or Havili. This tells me that either Field or Mann will play halves with Mccrone back up 6,7,9,13.

Based on that squad and the warped mind of our coach I expect him to select :

Josh Dugan
Nene Macdonald
Euan Aitken
Tim Lafai
Jason Nightingale
Gareth Widdop
Josh McCrone
Jack de Belin
Tyson Frizell
Joel Thompson
Leeson Ah Mau
Cameron McInnes
Russell Packer

Jacob Host
Tariq Sims
Paul Vaughan
Will Matthews

Surprise omissions

Kurt Mann
Jai Field
Taane Milne

Am basing my assumptions on fact Mary has told us we would be playing a power forward game.

Aitken has just signed a contract before Milne and Mann.

Mann may be a victim of his own versatility.

Field will be deemed not ready.

I would be inclined to play Mann at 7 instead of McCrone
Field to the bench instead of Matthews
I have no preference between Aitken and Milne, both promising footballers.
Havili as 18th man

Once Dufty is fit I am hoping Mary gives him a go when Duges is injured.

Cut Lafai and Matthews for ********* and Leilua and I think this is a pretty good side. Maybe also include Havili and have Mann play in the halves for 80min.
Heaven forbid almost peace in our time
I agree with you in cutting Lafai and Matthews.
Still a trial so Lelilua might get some benefit from playing but not too concerned if he didn't play.
I agree with you in selecting Havili
I wouldn't have Mc Crone.
I note you say Mann in the halves for 80, I would like to know your thinking on that?
If he does go well who does he partner Rd 1?
