Word from the Bulldogs camp is that Jayden Okunbor is set to be sacked and Corey Harawira-Naera suspended for several weeks following THAT schoolgirl scandal in Port Macquarie.

And I'm hearing from inside the Bulldogs camp that Kiwi ace Harawira-Naera can expect a frosty reception when he does eventually return to arms.

Players and officials are fuming with the pair, feeling they derailed an excellent build-up to the premiership that saw the Dogs lose their opening game to Parramatta.

"We are filthy with them," an official told Wide World of Sports. "They have blackened the name of the club and undone all the good work from the boys over the summer.

"It won't be forgotten in a hurry."

MPA are sponsors of bulldogs
I'm hearing the Bulldogs Leagues club is going to sponsor them. I can't see how you could get a normal sponsor when so many things are up in the air currently.

And some of the current sponsosr might pull out for other clubs using a force majeure clause to exit and save cash.

Canterbury players Corey Harawira-Naera and Jayden Okunbor have been granted show cause notice extensions by the NRL following alleged incidents during the club's pre-season trip to Port Macquarie in February.

Harawira-Naera, 24, and Okunbor, 23, were stood down by the Bulldogs last Tuesday and handed show cause notices by the game's governing body for allegedly breaching the NRL's code of conduct.

Neither player is under criminal investigation but their futures at Belmore remain under a cloud after they allegedly brought high school students back to the team's hotel prior to the side's trial game against Canberra.

The players were due to submit a response to the NRL by Tuesday afternoon but Bulldogs coach Dean Pay confirmed the club had asked for more time and their request was granted.

An NRL spokesman confirmed each player would have a further five business days to submit a response.

"The Bulldogs requested and due to the serious nature of the allegations the request was accepted," an NRL spokesman said on Wednesday.

Harawira-Naera and Okunbor have been suspended from training and playing duties until the investigation is completed.

A report in the Sydney Morning Herald last week detailed how the incidents cost the club a $2 million sponsorship deal with restaurant chain Rashays.

We're strong on our standards and values.

Dean Pay
Pay was hopeful the club could find a new major sponsor soon despite the coronavirus pandemic.

"We're a united club and have good people in the place," Pay said.

"We're strong on our standards and values. It's important we stick together in these times.

"The people at the leagues club are so supportive of us."

Canterbury held their final training session run at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday morning with Pay eager to have his side train at the empty venue prior to their round-two clash with the Cowboys on Thursday night.

The Bulldogs offered a strong defensive display in their 8-2 loss to the Eels a week ago but they struggled with the ball in hand despite enjoying 52% of possession in the match.

Pay's outfit ranked well alongside most top eight sides defensively in 2019 but their average of 13.6 points scored per game is a figure they're trying to improve on.

"We've put a lot of hard work into our defence, we want to build a foundation off that," Pay said.

"We want to score a few more points and that will come as we go along, we're working hard in that area."

Pay has called in teenage prodigy Jake Averillo to make his NRL debut from the bench.

Averillo starred in the club's recent Nines campaign in Perth but unfortunately will not be able to have family and friends in attendance for his big moment due to the crowd ban in place.

"Jake's a local boy, he has come through our system and can play a number of positions," Pay said.

"He can play in the halves, centres, wing and fullback. It's ideal to have him on the bench. He's a talented kid and we're all excited about him.

"If nothing happens injury-wise or HIA-wise I'm going to have to find a way to get him on the field."

The NRL have today deregistered both Jayden Okunbor and Corey Harawira-Naera with immediate effect and as a result their playing contracts with the Bulldogs have been cancelled.

Our Club acted swiftly and was proactive in relation to the incidents in accordance with the expectations of our club and the NRL guidelines. Accordingly, our Club fully supports the determination made by the NRL in defence of the reputation of our game and the conduct of the majority of players who represent their respective clubs in the right way.

The conduct of the two players, on the eve of our final trial match, demonstrated an unacceptable lack of respect for their teammates, their coach and club officials, our hosts in Port Macquarie and fans of the game everywhere.

An important part of the role of being a professional rugby league player is to promote the game and act as an ambassador for your club and the code. There can be no tolerance for any abuse of the privileged status the game affords its leading players.

The consequences of this matter have been serious and far-reaching and protecting the welfare of the young women involved has been a priority for us since we were first alerted to this issue. They have, unfortunately, been the victims of some distasteful social media attacks which are not called for and need to stop. We have been in regular contact with them, their families and their school and we will continue to offer ongoing support moving forward.

Jayden and Corey have been subject to intense scrutiny in recent times and have paid a heavy price for their behaviour. They too are entitled to welfare support to help them through this period and assist them into the next stage of their careers. Our Club will liaise with their respective agents, the NRL and the Rugby League Players Association to ensure they receive the support and guidance they need.

We know and accept that there will be conflicting views about the penalties handed out to these two players. Our united view as a Club is that a firm line must be drawn in the sand to uphold the standards and values that define our club. We want to assure our members, partners and supporters that we have outstanding people at the Bulldogs who are working harder than ever to make sure anyone associated with our club understands that we have a culture that we all live by and that this type of behaviour will simply not be tolerated.

Canterbury Bulldogs player Jayden Okunbor to appeal NRL ...

The NRL has received an appeal from sacked Canterbury Bulldogs player Jayden Okunbor in relation to his sacking over the schoolgirl sex incident in Port Macquarie last month.

Okunbor, as well as Bulldogs teammate Corey Harawira-Naera, were last week deregistered by the NRL for bringing schoolgirls back to the team hotel during the club's preseason trip to Port Macquarie.

Okunbor has this week appealed the NRL's decision, despite meeting the girl during a visit to the school on the same day she visited him at the hotel and engaged in consensual sex.

The appeals committee, led by Ian Callinan QC, will discuss the matter in the coming weeks.

AdvertisementThe pair were initially handed show-cause notices by the NRL and had several weeks to put forward their respective cases, however the NRL deemed their behaviour to be "very serious breaches" of the game's code of conduct.

"The behaviour of both players was inexcusable and a very serious breach of the code of conduct," NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said.

"The game will not tolerate such conduct and as such both players have had their registrations cancelled. This decision should send a very clear message to all players of our stance on such behaviour."

In a statement, the Bulldogs supported the NRL's call to cancel the pair's contracts, effective immediately.

"Our club acted swiftly and was proactive in relation to the incidents in accordance with the expectations of our club and the NRL guidelines," the statement read.

"Accordingly, our club fully supports the determination made by the NRL in defence of the reputation of our game and the conduct of the majority of players who represent their respective clubs in the right way."

was lodge on club duty at the time , in new york city ?
The "club duty" aspect pales into insignificance next to the acts themselves. Inappropriate but consensual sex versus an extended crazed physical assault leaving victims fearing for their lives.
Ahh the old Matt Lodge protest...
I don't think it is asking too much to have some general sense of consistency as to where the line is on unforgivable behaviour.

They are both idiots but the NRL has allowed much worse back in the game. Consensual sex with someone above the age of consent is a moral failing in this situation but what Matt Lodge did is far worse and he gets to play.

But it's not like Matt Lodge was just sacked by the Tigers, and then restarted with the Broncos the next year. He spent 1yr not playing, then 1yr with Redcliffe before being signed to the Broncos.

I'd expect the same sort of thing to happen with these guys. You can't let players do stupid stuff, and then welcome them back with open arms. That culture in Rugby League is changing for the better. Just some clubs are ahead of the curve in this department.

Ahh the old Phil Rothfield protest... “all we want is consistency...”...

How about imposing a 2 year absence from the NRL and $1.6M fine (USD) on all transgressors before they can apply to re-enter as a registered player....

Then you and Mr Rothfield can be happy with consistency.

But in all seriousness I do get why people feel it inconsistent that people who commit crimes are playing in the NRL, when guys who haven’t like these two, and the likes of Todd Carney haven’t yet are banned.

For mine, the likes of Lodge and Russell Packer have paid the price for their crimes and are now forging ahead in the right way, they’ve since proven the worth of being given another opportunity and neither of them have transgressed again.

These two may be given a similar opportunity to return to the NRL in future. They don’t have to go to jail in the meantime or pay a crippling fine like the others.
