Various stories around the place - the match fixing stuff really damaged his reputation and rightfully so, but he was a spectacular all rounder for us, huge talent... and far too young to be having this happen...

Fight hard big man
ahhh geez....

Fit as a fiddle at 51 and that's going on...

I don't look at the mud thrown at people in the past in things like this.

Hoping he pulls through ok.

Horrible news, wishing him all the best i loved watching him play.

Played an amazing innings against us in NZ in 99 I think, gave Warne a quality pizzling.

This is the latest I found dated 27/8.

Poor bugger, hope we hear some good news in the months ahead

Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns is paralysed in his legs after suffering a stroke in his spine following emergency heart surgery in Sydney.

The 51-year-old had returned to his home city Canberra but remained in a serious condition, reports in New Zealand said, citing a statement from his lawyer Aaron Lloyd.

"During the life-saving emergency heart surgery Chris underwent in Sydney he suffered a stroke in his spine. This has resulted in paralysis in his legs," the statement said.

"As a result he will be undertaking a significant rehabilitation process at a specialist spinal hospital in Australia.

"Chris and his family now want to focus on spending time together where possible and making whatever progress they can in his recovery."

Cairns, the son of former Test player Lance Cairns, played 62 tests and 215 one day internationals for New Zealand between 1989 and 2006.

He came off life support last week after surgery at a Sydney hospital.

New Zealand media reported Cairns had suffered an aortic dissection — a tear in the body's main artery — in Canberra earlier this month.

Cairns has lived in Canberra with his wife and children for several years.

Saw this a while back obvs but didn't wanna comment....it just felt really strange given he's a good mate of a guy I play cricket with and I might have now genuinely played with the man in his last ever cricket match? Glad to see he looks to have pulled through in terms of risk to life, anyway.

Absolute champion bloke. Plenty of time to just chat over a beer, very frankly and honestly. He's a funny guy and very humble and giving with his experience. Not sure what I expected of him based on the stories but he completely won us chumps over anyway. Pretty sure he signed the match ball for the guy who got him out (after a ridiculously casual 45-odd)? Haha. Legit unprompted wrote on it that old mate "yorked NZ captain Chris Cairns with this ball" or something (he was caught at cow) and gave it the old moniker.

Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns is not sure he will walk again, but says he is lucky to be alive after suffering a spinal stroke following life-saving treatment for a torn artery in August.

The stroke left the 51-year-old paralysed from the waist down.

"I don't know if I'll ever walk again and I have made my peace with that," Cairns told the Daily Telegraph.

"It's now about understanding I can lead a full and enjoyable life in a wheelchair but at the same time knowing it will be different."

Cairns suffered a heart attack in August that resulted in an aortic dissection — a rupture of the aorta, which is the main artery that carries blood from the heart.

He was rushed into emergency surgery.
