If we release a player who is under contract does that still count in the salary cap for the year ahead? Say we released Wilson, and payed him out for 2005, does the money he was on come off our cap next year?
Hope you guys know what I mean.

no, because they're no longer with us, although if we release him to another club we more than likely would still be paying some of his salary. IM pretty sure thats how it works, i may be wrong though.

it can be, its just not something thats talked alot about therefore most people are unclear as to how it works exactly.

it counts to the year he gets the dough.

Eg. Wilson gets his 05 money in 04 then it counts to the 04 cap and 0 against the 05 cap.

If they find Wilson a new home but have to pay say $50k of his contract in 05 then the $50k counts against the Tigers and the rest against his new club.

If they have room left under this year's cap then using it to pay out some dead wood wouldn't hurt at all. They could even just remain at the club but on a lower amount next year. Say Graham was paid out most of his contract for next year now. He could stay at the club on the rest (say $60K) as a reggie and that would be all that would count to the cap next year. It's a matter of if the Tiges have the cash and the room on the cap.

Thanx yappy, i knew there was more, just wasnt aware what it was. I think if the tigers can they should certainly explore that option with Graham.

I think you'll find that's what Manly are doing with their new signings like Kite. Because they are way under the cap in 04, but now have a heap of dough thank to Max. So they are paying Kite a big sign on fee in 04 so that the amount that counts to their cap for the next few years is going to be less.

Thats what I was saying about Payten when he joined us, because the Roosters and Raiders havn't made him a lump sum payment and is still on there cap books for a reduce wage
