Mate, my issue is not with Clarke not being picked. I'm not saying he should be re-picked after one decent dig at state level. I'm just citing the irony of Lockyno1 saying Clarke has not done enough but still advocating Symonds . Symonds did not deserve to be picked. That is the issues. It really has nothing to do with Clarke. Where I've written Clarke, insert any other Australian Batsmen with the credentials and the point stands.

FFS mate, one is an all-rounder and one is a batsman. I am not disagreeing with you that Symonds' bowling is handy but nothing else at test level, but he is picked as an all-rounder! Clarke is not, he is a batsman. The selectors are going with a new format, with 5 batsman, 1 all-rounder, gilly, and 4 bowlers. Now Clarke has to fit into the 5 batsman and quite frankly he aint going to knock Hodge or Hussey out yet with 3 scores when these two have been scoring for years! Symonds is the best all-rounder we have got at the moment with Watson injured and Hopes not bowling yet, so we have to realise he will be picked. Symonds deserves a chance, but I am still not saying he is our all-rounder. He will play till Watson is back. Simple.

surley Jaques should be further up the pecking order than Symonds, if the Pura Cup is the measuring stick

Jaques is an opener. Next middle order spot would be Clarke, Cosgrove, S.Marsh, D.Hussey.

Mate, that's my bloody point. I was saying Symonds should not be picked as an all rounder. It's a joke. If he is being picked as a batsmen than that is also a joke. Either way he shouldn't be in the team. Blind Freddy can see it. Everyone can see it, except Ponting and Queenslanders, 2 of whom happen to be on the board of selectors.

So what. It doesn't have to be a straight swap. It's not like openers are that specialist that they can't drop down the order. Drop Symonds, slot Jaques into 4 and the problem is solved. But Jaques is an evil Blue.

Doesn't seem to matter

How many openers, like Langer, Blewitt etc came into the team as a middle order batsman and then got promoted up the order

As I keep saying, I believe if they are genuine international players, they can bat anyhwere, and Hussey is a good example, he will probably be our next opener, and some one will take his middle order spot.

It will be interesting to see what Symonds does in the perth test on the 16th.

If the wicket is a typical perth fast track, Lee, McGrath and Bracken (or Clark) should be enough to skittle the boks, with Warne as back up variety
So Symonds may not even bowl

Having said that, he definately will bat.
He couldnt get going on batting tracks in Adelaide or Hobart,
so what is he gonna do in Perth against a far better attack??

He is seen as an opener. The other middle order batsman I have mentioned are very good in the middle order. Jaques will have to wait till an opening spot.
