Clearing up media myths

1. Saints have a current on-paper roster that Is easily too 8 material.

Mr Hooper, only the most ardent Saints fan or inattentive football judge could actually believe this BS. Take a look at our bench this week. This brain fart now suits the bash Mary backflip narrative doing the rounds in the media since it was apparent he’d be flicked.

The same judges were singing his praises only last season. We have some big reputation players yes but a horribly unbalanced roster. Gaping holes in the forwards, a lack of penetration and finishing power out wide, poor decision-making in the spine and a general lack of skill, character, resilience and composure across the park.

This IS mostly a situation of McGregor’s making, notwithstanding the moral-sapping JDB fiasco but this ain’t a top 8 squad Good sir, and we’ve all known it for more than 18 months.

2. Saints are a cash-strapped club.

My favourite! How is it possible that a 50//50 ownership model of WIN Corp, run by the 134th richest man in Australia (Net worth valued at $702m, according to AFR, 2019), and a still asset-rich St George Leagues, with $58m portfolio and a net profit of $3m in 2018 according to annual reports, be considered cash-strapped?

Isn’t it more the case that the owner-partnership simply try to outdo each other in their miserly contributions to the football club? I think you’ll find this is the case. The proof is in the pudding. WIN Corp’s 50% buyout took forever because they low-balled until Saints were desperately in need of a cash injection. They bought out the debt of around $6m and their overall stake was reported to be Just short of $10m. Chicken feed for a once top-5 national sporting brand.

We’ve been hearing for 12 months the club could not afford to pay out an $850k coaching contract and appoint another coach on top of that, yet when push finally came to shove today, with their hand forced, they’ve stumped up Mary’s redundancy as could have happened this time last season.

Who knows, maybe the extra gardening leave costs could have been offset by savings made in lost memberships, payouts on dud signings, lost gate takings and a bargain coach at the right time like J Holbrook. Now they’re looking at stumping up twice the coin for Bennett.
