Clint Gutherson

Read that Clint Gutherson is still in negotiations with the Eels, whose cap situation is pretty tight, and has not signed yet. Apparently his manager has given an undertaking that he will consider any offer from the Eels first before testing the market. He is reputedly close to Arthur who also has not been signed beyond this year. Handy five eight/ fullback who is still only 24 years old. With Widdop leaving and injured and Mary 's contract not extended yet, it might be time to consider a package deal.

Interesting player but he's either going to take unders to stay/move to a stronger situation or go to a higher bidder.

I would prefer to give the following players a go before considering Gutherson at Fullback:

Dufty
Lomax
Marsters
Field

Lomax and Marsters should both get some additional training from a sprint coach. They are both fast between the ears which often leads to being in the right place at the right time.

Dufty and Field have electrifying speed but need to continue to bulk up and work on positioning and their defensive technique.

If Dufty is injured this year it will be interesting to see who Mary selects at Fullback.

Gutherson may have been a good pick up but for signing Norman although in many ways it really is time for us to sign specialist players rather than all rounders.
We seem to attract "utilities" when we actually need professionals that truly excel in 1 position.
Gutherson may in fact be a specialist but his career thus far hasn't allowed him to excel at just 1 thing.

I'd say the Eels are looking at a Haynes signing in the near future and because of this are willing to release Gutherson.

Gutherson is a lot more than handy.
Better than any custodian that we can provide for now.
He would be a great pick up.
As for Arthur, this guy can coach - would be a major upgrade on Mr. Extension.

It's a no for me.
For some reason I cant warm to him.He tries hard but at times looks like a headless chook running around. And besides why would he leave when he's the captain unless it's for marquee money, which imo he's not.

We have Dufty, Lomax and Norman and Field for the 1 and 6 jumpers, where would we play this numpty? He probably thinks he's worth $500K-$600K per season........that would buy you a damn good outside back with speed, which is where our immediate deficiency is. Big no from me.
