"So far three weeks into our training and I’d have to say the pre season has been positive for us. It’s been very good but at the same time it’s been really hard for the players.

They’ve had a pretty big workload and because of that they’ve been pretty sore most mornings when they’ve turned up after some tough sessions the day before. I’d say it has probably been a larger training load than they’ve had before, at least for as long as I’ve been here at the Sharks.

Hopefully they’ll start to reap the benefits and I’m sure they will. This is week 3, by week 6 it becomes a little bit easier but the good thing is we’re getting a lot of work done.

We’ve changed it up a little and it’s been a bit different this year. For starters we’ve got a different aspect with this Zuu Fit Training, which all about body weight exercises focusing on core strength and stability, those guys have come down from the Gold Coast, and we’re doing a little bit more speed work and running at the Sylvania Athletics track on Mondays and Wednesdays.

In the past we incorporated that into our field sessions but we thought a few subtle changes were needed. So as a result we’ve done more running and while we still need to be big and strong, I identified our speed as one aspect we needed to pick up and put more time into this off season.

The way our training has worked for example is this week was a heavy week, next week will be a maintenance week, then they go heavy again in week five and then another maintenance week in week six. It’s a process of getting the boys to where we need them to be before Christmas and we need to get a lot more work done before then.

When Christmas comes along we’ll have a short break, but with the season starting a week earlier it pushes everything forward, the trials included. So when we come back to training the plan is to keep going with the strength and conditioning component but we’ll have them advanced enough in that area that January will be more about the footy specific stuff, getting ourselves ready for the trials which come around in early February.

As for the squad itself, I must say I’ve been impressed with all of the new players to the club. A few of them have only just resumed to full training after having off-season surgery or because they are carrying niggling injuries but they are all slowly coming back into the main group and the good thing is none of the injuries are long term. Bryce Gibbs has just come back into the main group and Andrew Fifita is another to recently return to the main group as well. Jeff Robson has a niggling injury, Isaac De Gois has a niggling injury but they are getting on top of those problems and in general I’ve been pretty impressed with all of the boys.

In particular I should give Benny Ross a special wrap, he has been great. His training is good, but it’s not just that, his attitude, seniority and leadership within the group has been a standout.

And with our international players who aren’t back with us as yet, Gal I don’t worry about because even when he’s not here training with us, he’ll be training. He’ll have a couple of days off here and there, but he’s one of those players who enjoys his training and will do something most days. Also in knowing Gal, he’ll turn up to our training as well without being invited.

With Jeremy Smith he’ll come in and do a bit of strength stuff before Christmas, probably late in December, to make sure he’s where he needs to be.

But for them it’s more their training history and the fact they both been doing this for about 15 years, so they come to hand a lot quicker than other players. They’re not going to let themselves go and they do need a rest.

The first three weeks have flown by and it’s been enjoyable. But it’s on again on Monday and we’ll be back hard at work."

Ross really does come across as an awesome club man. So does Gibbs for that matter... Leaders upfront are always handy

great to hear we're training harder than previous years - I think we need it. It sucks when a side looks underdone physically. Speed has definately been lacking so good to see there's a specific focus on that too.
Thanks for sharing that Poss.

After his season this year I hope Ross can do the same and play all games for us. I agree he's an important aquisition in that leadership type role (especially when Gal is on Rep duty etc).

I hope they don't just concentrate in running from A to B. There's other things we need be quick at such as play the ball, dummy half pass & passing. Over the last few years we have done those type of things 10% slower than other teams & that is the difference between making a break or being tackled, for example.

Absolute giant of a man from Dogs storm now Dogs again . Been hampered 2 seasons in a row with year long injuries.
But if Dogs get him & the other big front rower snorkel they had last year together on the filed, geez. Both about 115 kgs & lightning fast.

At least there's no mention of tennis balls. ;)

All sounds good, and it's nice to see Ben Ross step up.
