"So far three weeks into our training and Id have to say the pre season has been positive for us. Its been very good but at the same time its been really hard for the players.
Theyve had a pretty big workload and because of that theyve been pretty sore most mornings when theyve turned up after some tough sessions the day before. Id say it has probably been a larger training load than theyve had before, at least for as long as Ive been here at the Sharks.
Hopefully theyll start to reap the benefits and Im sure they will. This is week 3, by week 6 it becomes a little bit easier but the good thing is were getting a lot of work done.
Weve changed it up a little and its been a bit different this year. For starters weve got a different aspect with this Zuu Fit Training, which all about body weight exercises focusing on core strength and stability, those guys have come down from the Gold Coast, and were doing a little bit more speed work and running at the Sylvania Athletics track on Mondays and Wednesdays.
In the past we incorporated that into our field sessions but we thought a few subtle changes were needed. So as a result weve done more running and while we still need to be big and strong, I identified our speed as one aspect we needed to pick up and put more time into this off season.
The way our training has worked for example is this week was a heavy week, next week will be a maintenance week, then they go heavy again in week five and then another maintenance week in week six. Its a process of getting the boys to where we need them to be before Christmas and we need to get a lot more work done before then.
When Christmas comes along well have a short break, but with the season starting a week earlier it pushes everything forward, the trials included. So when we come back to training the plan is to keep going with the strength and conditioning component but well have them advanced enough in that area that January will be more about the footy specific stuff, getting ourselves ready for the trials which come around in early February.
As for the squad itself, I must say Ive been impressed with all of the new players to the club. A few of them have only just resumed to full training after having off-season surgery or because they are carrying niggling injuries but they are all slowly coming back into the main group and the good thing is none of the injuries are long term. Bryce Gibbs has just come back into the main group and Andrew Fifita is another to recently return to the main group as well. Jeff Robson has a niggling injury, Isaac De Gois has a niggling injury but they are getting on top of those problems and in general Ive been pretty impressed with all of the boys.
In particular I should give Benny Ross a special wrap, he has been great. His training is good, but its not just that, his attitude, seniority and leadership within the group has been a standout.
And with our international players who arent back with us as yet, Gal I dont worry about because even when hes not here training with us, hell be training. Hell have a couple of days off here and there, but hes one of those players who enjoys his training and will do something most days. Also in knowing Gal, hell turn up to our training as well without being invited.
With Jeremy Smith hell come in and do a bit of strength stuff before Christmas, probably late in December, to make sure hes where he needs to be.
But for them its more their training history and the fact they both been doing this for about 15 years, so they come to hand a lot quicker than other players. Theyre not going to let themselves go and they do need a rest.
The first three weeks have flown by and its been enjoyable. But its on again on Monday and well be back hard at work."
