20 stars for 2021 | Cody Ramsey

Right from the outset in 2020, Cody Ramsey was one of many young stars who took the rugby league world by storm at the NRL Nines in Perth as he helped the Dragons to a Grand Final berth against the North Queensland Cowboys. The Orange product was deservedly named in the Team of the Tournament.

The 20-year-old Ramsey came through the St George Illawarra junior representative system among the club’s most promising crop of talent in recent memory, including Jayden Sullivan, Aaron Schoupp and Feagai twins Max and Matthew. Each of them were members of the successful Steelers’ side who defeated Manly-Warringah 34-23 in the 2019 UNE SG Ball Cup Grand Final.

Throughout that season Ramsey scored or had a hand in countless four-pointers from almost anywhere on the park, whether it was a dangerous kick return in broken field, support play through the middle-third, blinding speed in open space or a diving finish in the corner.

Ramsey went on to play the rest of 2019 in St George Illawarra’s Jersey Flegg Cup side and 18 tries later was named the Under-20s Player of the Year for the Red V. By the end of the season Ramsey had proved he was capable of making it in the NRL as the opportunity came to train with Paul McGregor’s top squad.

Just like Ramsey’s beginning to the 2020 season, his debut NRL game in Round 18 at WIN Stadium against Canberra couldn’t have started any better. The rookie winger caught the ball out wide within metres from the line for the first touch of his career before manoeuvring around his opposite number to score the opening try of the match, all in front of his friends and family in attendance.

The Dubbo CYMS junior will now enter the next season with three first grade games under his belt and can lock in an outside back spot at the Dragons after Jason Saab and Euan Aitken left the club at the end of 2020.

St George Illawarra fans can certainly look forward to bigger and better things for Ramsey as he looks gain more NRL experience in 2021.

Ramsey is one of the most exciting prospects I can recall. I would like to see Billy Slater give him some one on one coaching. Some have even already seen a bit of Slater in Ramsey. Slater played a big part in Papenhuyzen's development.

We also should be signing up Ramsey long term ASAP.

Ramsey 185cm Slater 178cm Pap 181cm
Ramsey 80kg Slater 89kg Pap 80kgs
Ramsey Slater & Pap all debuted at 20

It’s been well publicised that Ramsey has been bulking up in the off season you’d think his playing weight will end up about 90kgs. Some pro sprint training would also help. It’s unfortunate we don’t have an NFL style combine for 18-20yrs to get consistency in comparing stats particularly speed & jump height.

For those interested;

Dufty 179cm, 83kg & debut 21yrs

I couldn’t find any height or weight stats for James Schiller

It may just be the case that we move from Dufty to Schiller at fullback. I can see a future team where our whole backline is from our local junior ranks. Maybe it can look like this:

1. Schiller
2. Matt Feagai
3. Lomax
4. Max Feagai
5. Ramsey
6. Sloan
7. Sullivan

Ravalawa to our right edge backrow position. He has shown the strength and speed to do well there and now he is getting close to the right size to be very competitive in that position.
This might be the reason Hook has not recruited to fill Frizell's spot. Bird to lock if De Belin is unavailable.

It might be the case that one of the above young players don't make it in first grade. I can't see that happening but if it does, then he will surely be a good back up in reserve grade.

I'd say that season 2021 will reveal a lot regarding the first grade potential/suitability for our squad and I am very excited to see this all unfold. So for those who do prove themselves, I hope the club secures their services long term.

So where does Jr Amone play?

Sloan, as far as I'm aware, is a wing/centre/fullback not a 5/8.

Possm, I like your earlier idea of moving Dufty to 5/8, but he would have to have a kicking game to play there. I think Ramsey is our future fullback. I like the idea of a future backline of

1 Ramsey
2 Feagai
3 Schiller
4 Lomax
5 Feagai
6 Dufty
7 Sullivan

Bird is such a great footballer. I don't know what his best position is. I thought he was great in his debut year at 5/8. Then he proved himself to be a very good centre. Seibold planned to give Bird first shot at fullback, before he got injured last year. With our current squad I would like to see Bird given a go at edge backrow. Before lock became like a 3rd prop, lock probably would have been Bird's best position. Maybe he would make a good lock in today's game too. He is the kind of player that you want to involved as much as possible.

I like your idea of Rava to edge forward. I have also thought about it myself. I think centre could be his best position, but I also would like to see him tried at edge backrow too. I would like to see Rava trialled in those positions during the trials and in CC. If he could perform well in those 2 positions, he would also make a great bench player, who could be an impact forward off the bench and be able to cover centre or wing in case of an injury to an outside back.

I would like to see Dufty given a shot a 5/8. If the experiment didn't work, then I would be looking at Amone for 2022. Amone looks like another good prospect. He and Sullivan also already have a combination.

I think Slone's best position is fullback, followed by 5/8, but that is only based off highlights.

Schiller isn’t in the 30 man FG squad or even in the development squad. I doubt he’ll play first grade in 2021. Pretty sure he played just the 2 SG Ball games in 2020 on the wing. I might be wrong about that I’m sure someone will correct me.

Only questions for this season are; Is Ramsey a better FB than Dufty? What contact extension is Ramsey offered? Fullbacks are generally paid more than wingers. And is Dufty offered an extension or is he let go?

Schiller is still under contract for another 2 years so plenty of time to see where he fits.

I would think we have seen enough of Ramsey to sign him longer term ASAP. Only reason not to that I see is if he wants more cash than warranted... but that’s a decision for those with the big bucks.

Dufty we can see, options exist so we aren’t forced to sign him unless the price is right. I think Ramsey could sit on the wing for a while, and Dufty at FB. That’s what’s best for the team today... then we see.

You’d have to think Ramsey would be signed up long term like Lomax. I know the doubters will say he’s only played a handful of games but like Lomax Cody has shown enough to warrant the risk of a 3-5yr deal. Cody also looks like a good clubman, always smiling & fun to be around.

I’m pretty sure of the elite group of backs we have only Ramsey & Dufty are up this year.

That’s interesting I didn’t realise Schiller is such a big unit. Certainly from a stat perspective Tedesco has been the benchmark since Slater’s retirement. Teddy is 184cm & 94kg

I’m sure Schiller will get promoted to the top 30 later this year via the development squad & he’ll be challenging for first grade in ‘22.

St George Illawarra have announced that Cody Ramsey has re-signed with the Dragons for a further three seasons, until at least the end of the 2024.

Ramsey made his NRL debut in Round 18 last year and went on to play three first grade games by season end.

The NRL Perth Nines Rookie of the Tournament will now be on the hunt to secure a Round 1 backline berth during Saturday's Charity Shield clash against the Rabbitohs.

"I'm stoked to remain a Dragon for the next few years. I've had a great journey getting to this point in my career and it means a whole lot to my whole family that I've managed to secure my future in the Red V," Ramsey said.

"I still have a lot more improvement and learning in me. That's something that has been drilled into me by all my coaches which I can appreciate. I can't wait to develop further and better myself over the coming years."

Dragons general manager of football Ben Haran said Ramsey is a player who Red V members, partners and fans should be excited about.

"Cody showed a great desire to remain a Dragon, which is very important for a proud organisation such as St George Illawarra," Haran said.

"We identified a number of years ago that Cody had great potential and we're starting to see him deliver on that now in the top squad.

"To see a quality player and person like Cody come through our junior representative pathway is another pleasing aspect to his retention.

"Cody's ability to play in numerous positions will hold him in good stead over the upcoming season and beyond."

Ramsey's re-signing follows the signings of Andrew McCullough, Daniel Alvaro, Jack Bird and Poasa Faamausili and the retention of Mat and Max Feagai, Josh Kerr, Jackson Ford, Mikaele Ravalawa, Adam Clune, Junior Amone and Tyrell Sloan ahead of the Dragons' 2021 campaign.

Be in that number in 2021. Become a Red V member today. For more information on membership, please visit: dragons.com.au/membership. Have any questions? Check our membership FAQs or contact us via 1300 DRAGON (1300 372 466) during business hours, or email redv@dragons.com.au.
