Dragons star Cody Ramsey has taken the first steps towards a rugby league return, taking the field with teammates after 18 month sidelined due to a severe illness.

The 24-year-old has been battling ulcerative colitis over the past 18 months which can be the result of a malfunctioning immune system, causing ulcers and inflammation in the bowels.

Ramsey had to endure several lengthy and major operations, with doctors holding the belief he would never play professional rugby league again.

The Dragons have looked after the Molong product, splitting the final year of his contract set to end in 2024 so that he remains on the books until the end of the 2025 season.

He was ruled out for all of 2023 and 2024 after receiving medical advice, but was determined to return to the field and paid regular visits to the club’s gym.

Ramsey has lost a significant amount of weight during his time sidelined, but Flanagan was excited to see him back with a football in hand.

Any further update on Cody Ramsey? That article was May 28th 2024.

He looks really thin in the picture provided.

It would take an enormous amount of time before he stacks on reasonable muscle, just the pure fact that he is doing it shows tremendous courage. I wish him everything life has to offer, he deserves it.

St George Illawarra have again been granted salary cap exemption for injured fullback Cody Ramsey, who is yet to rule out hope of a rugby league comeback.

Ramsey was due to return to the Dragons’ top-30 squad for 2025, having missed the past two seasons.

The NRL has recently agreed that while Ramsay will still be paid in full by the club next season, that figure will not count towards the salary cap nor will Ramsey be formally part of St George Illawarra’s top-30 squad.
The Dragons – and the NRL – are continuing to do the right thing by Ramsey, who is slowly getting back to full health after suffering ulcerative colitis – a career threatening condition.

The Dragons split the final year of his contract over two seasons, which keeps him on the books until the end of next year.

The NRL has allowed the figure – about $200,000 – to not count towards the Dragons’ salary cap to ensure that there is no pressure on Ramsey to try to rush back.

The NRL granted a similar dispensation last year and this year in what was considered a game first. The 24-year-old took tentative steps this year when he returned to light training duties in May.
The decision means he will be unable to play first grade next year unless the club make a position and cap space available in their top 30 to accommodate him.

Well done to who ever organised this. This off season just gets better and better,
Benny gone, decent players being targeted and signed, the NRL granting salary cap relief for Cody. Roll on Xmas to see what Santa can deliver
Yep agree, but this also happened last year. We have excluded him from Top 30 this year. If he comes good we can give someone the heave-ho. Club approached NRL at the end of 2023 or early 24 for the cap dispensation

Yep, good things are happening for the Dragons. Once we get those players that Flanno wants, he will have a team that he knows will do us all proud. We deserve it.

Here is a podcast he is in that just got posted if anyone wants to watch/listen. What a story if he can make it back to first grade tough bugger
I'm an avid ready of our forum, but very rarely post anything. Just enjoy all comments about our great club. After watching Cody's podcast, and listening to what he said is all aspiring. Just fealt I needed to post. The things that this young man has gone through is horrendous. If Cody's will and determination is a factor in his training and recovery, I believe he will make it back on the paddock. Whether it be in the Reggie's, or in the NRL. What an inspiration. If he pulls that guernsey back on, I would like to be there. Red V, part of me.
