It is an undisputed fact that the two best bands in Australian history are Cold Chisel and Midnight Oil. If you believe that Savage Garden, Powderfinger, Silverchair are anywhere near these bands, you need your ears checked.
Both of these bands had a distinctly Australian sound and captured the spirit of their generation. They delivered great, unique sounds and formed great, meaningful lyrics.
Both bands had a charismatic lead man. Jimmy Barnes had the loudest scream in the business, but could vary his vocal range very effectively. Peter Garrett's look and unique perfomance style complemented his powerful vocal tone very effectively.
What I want to know is , which band was better?

My vote goes to Midnight Oil. Peter Garrett is the most powerful, intense performer I've ever seen. The music goes through his body and moves on impulse. Garrett and Hurst's lyrics were superb and made people aware of issues which affect all Australians.

AC/DC crap all over Midnight Oil. Your poll should be between Acca and Chisel

AC/DC are the most sucessful Australian recording artists of all time. It's even in the Guiness Book Of Records. They've sold around 80 million albums worldwide.

In a poll for the greatest Australian band of all time it should be imo -

AC/DC
Chisel
INXS
Oils
Jet (only because they're big overseas)

I voted Oils. The Oils are one of my favourite bands of all time. There isn't another band like them, they ooze originality and Australia. Their music is awesome and so is their messages in the songs.

Peter Garrett imo is one of the greatest Australians alive today.

*is wearing a signed Peter Garrett election shirt* :D

I agree it should have been out of Chisel & AC/DC but the argument will never be won on who is better because it's all personal choice.

I voted Chisel because I was raised on them & still listen to them now. The Oils never did much for me, no real reason just the music didnt appeal.

Oils absolutely crap all over Chisel. Their lyrics are more heartfelt, political and intelligent - Oils all the way.

I DON'T SEE THE LIVING END ON THERE!

Jet are big overseas? So what? The Living End toured with Jet and the Vines this year in America. They were billed third but still upstaged them! Jet and the Vines are just a pack of conceded little upstarts and the sooner Jet die in the arse the better!

As for the question, I am not voting because there is just no way to split them. Here are a few reasons

*Midnight Oil lasted longer
* both the bands songs are timeless: and
*they both had awesome drummers

I'd be inclined to vote Chisel because they have the greatest songwriter this country has ever produced in Mr D. WAlker!

Somebody talked about ACDC and Chisel. Well, if you wanna go down that path Ian Moss SHITS all over Angus Young as a guitarist.

I liek both bands, but Jet have sold 3 million albums in the US...That's a huge feat for any band.

I liked the Oils better because every song was a different story and a different song musically.

fantastic song...but its always going to be a bogan anthem that appears on every "Beer drinking songs" compilation....it tarnishes such an awesome song by a fantastic songwriter.
