If we roll over and let him go for nothing the coaching staff are dumber than we give them credit for.
Bennett will be laughing his old wrinkled ass off.

So why is he leaving? Surely we will use his $$$$ for a back. Flanno just in case backs are the ones who run fast and play out wide.

Differnet styles of players.
Smith has the best defense, but not much in the attack department.
Toops & Lewis are great in the defense area, but offer much more in attacking skills.

The rumored circumstances are family related, not football related.

Having secured Luke Lewis in very similar circumstances, I would have seen any compensation as a bonus rather than an expectation.

Yes, I understand that Lewis was "released" and became a free agent, but still the Panthers weren't compensated.

The reality is that these days that if a player doens't want to be at any given club they are generally realeased.

The other options are to not play, be injured, or perform a sackable offence.

If he wants to leave for personal reasons, it would be a poor reflection on the club not to let him go.

You need a playing group that want to be there.

The Sharks were seeking compensation fiz. I'm sure you know that as well despite your post of mitigation.

A player was offered but didn't want to leave Newie. The Sharks should of stuck solid from that point on no matter what the well documented reasons for Smith wanting to leave were/are.

This is not a case of Lewis for Smith. Both could easily stay as the club was well under the cap.

It's a f**k up of the highest order.

I appreciate all that, but what potential damage would there be with an unhappy player in the ranks if we play hard ball?

Do you believe Penrith have made a screw up releasing Lewis like they did?

I do agree with you in part, you don't just give your pquality players away.

Are you thinking if we didn't get a player we should have at least received a $$$ payment - On that level, I would be with you 100%

Exactly what I am thinking.

Also, Lewis is an orange and Smith is an apple. Penrith went out of their way to turn Lewy into an unhappy player. A LOT of water has gone under that bridge.
