Hi to all you people who know computers and stuff that I dont ;-)

I recieved this message from ebay:

Dear eBay customer,

Your bank has contacted us regarding some attempts of charges from your credit card via the eBay system. We have reasons to believe that you changed your registration information or that someone else has unauthorized access to your eBay account Due to recent activity, including possible unauthorized listings placed on your account, we will require a second confirmation of your identity with us in order to allow us to investigate this matter further. Your account is not suspended, but if in 48 hours after you receive this message your account is not confirmed, we reserve the right to suspend your eBay registration. If you received this notice and you are not the authorized account holder, please be aware that it is in violation of eBay policy to represent oneself as another eBay user. Such action may also be in violation of local, national, and/or international law. eBay is committed to assist law enforcement with any inquires related to attempts to misappropriate personal information with the intent to commit fraud or theft. Information will be provided at the request of law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

To confirm your identity with us click here:
(There is a link here but I removed it)

After responding to the message, we ask that you allow at least 72 hours for the case to be investigated. Emailing us before that time will result in delays. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience thi s may cause you and we would like to thank you for your cooperation as we review this matter.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do I know if that came from ebay or if I click that link that I will send a scammer my information which they can then use my details for??

I mean they say at the bottom not to email them within 72 hours as it will cause delays. Is that tim efor them to use my credit card before I notify anybody???

So either somebody already has stolen my details and had been caught by ebay and I need to click the link to make them do something OR somebody is trying to get my details and by clicking the link I will give them what they need.

If anyone has any idea please help me as I need to do something if it is for real.

Click or not to click...That is the question ;-)

Thanks Colonel, I happened to find my way there as your email came in.

Just for future knowledge to anyone using ebay, I forwarded the email to ebay as they suggest in the help page and with 10 minutes I recieved a reply from them saying thanks and that the email WAS NOT sent by them and they are looking into it.

So it WAS A SCAM and I feel lucky I didnt click on the link. Thanks Colonel for your help and suggest anyone recieveing these to check out ebays site first and send them the email to check it out if you are suspicious. They were very prompt and very helpful.

clicking on the link wouldnt have hurt you, id be happy to click on it now :D

it would do 1 of 2 things

- confirm your address as real for a spammer
- Ask you to enter bank details

Now I assume everyone by now would know not to do that

I get emails almost every day, telling me that (1) my account has been frozen, (2) suspect bank transactions need to be verified, (3) they need to confirm my password, or one of a few other less frequent requests. I just ignore them all, and trash them. The email account I use for transactions is different to the one I used to sign up (my work email), so I can easily tell that any I receive at home are fake.

Always check that when your mouse is over the link, that the destination listed in the status bar is the same as the text of the link your mouse is over if it's an address. If it's not an address, look at the link and if it's not from the company then report it.

That's not always accurate - it's pretty easy to make a link look like it's taking you to a particular site (the command's something like "onmouseover"). The safest way to know that you're going to the right place is to ensure that you've typed in the address yourself into the browser. And not even that's 100% accurate.

Not if you have Javascript disabled for email which you most certainly should. And 'onmouseover' won't display the link while you've clicked on it. Click(BUT DON'T LET GO) on the link and view the real link. Then move the mouse off before letting go of the button.

If it is anything that requires action on your part - ALWAYS write back to the company via their home page "contact us" form and ask if the email was legit.

The latest ebay scams are even using electronic stationary that includes real phone numbers to ebay so it would appear more legit.

Be careful what you click on as well. It could just bring you to another address or it could be a dialer install.

There is one rule to ALWAYS remember

Ebay NEVER EVER asks for your password

which I might add I found out the hard way.

I got a very legitimate looking email from ebay telling me I had to udate within a certain time or my account would besuspended, which I use everyday, so I followed the instructions to the letter.

The next day my hubby comes home and finds a computer, Gsomething or other, apparently about $10,000 worth listed on our ebay account for less tht $1000
we had emails from all over the world asking us what the deal is, needless to say we were freaking.

It took a few emails to the real ebay to determine what had happened and that this scam had been going on for a while.
We had to go and changepasswords everywhere including with our internet server as they had acsess to everything, our only saving grace was our credit card was not on file, as they did try to use it, they even changed out username.

If you find anything from ebay that asks for a password just forward, and dont change the topic or anything else to
[email protected]

this way they have a chance to track it

if in doubt dont do it
