NORTH Queensland chief executive Peter Parr has targeted Manly's Travis Burns for 2008.
Parr met with Burns's manager George Mimis at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Sydney last night.
Burns is seen as an ideal long-term replacement for Cowboys pivot Jason Smith whose future is not clear.
Smith, also off contract, has not decided if he will play beyond 2007.
Parr confirmed with The Manly Daily last night he was meeting with Mimis to discuss Burns.
``I'll be talking with George and I'll be raising Travis with him,'' Parr said before the meeting.
``If Jason retires, then someone who can play five-eighth would be a priority for us.
``He's (Burns) played pretty good for Manly at five-eighth and if Jason moves on, then certainly he would be a player of some interest to us.''
Burns, originally from Texas in southern Queensland, is desperate to play five-eighth.
The 22-year-old was yesterday named on the bench for Manly's round 12 NRL clash with Penrith at CUA Stadium.
The utility half said he was happy to play any role he could for the club as they strive to maintain their place at the top of the table.
``It's a little bit frustrating but I'm still in the 17 and still part of the team,'' Burns said.
``Hopefully I'll get more time on the field soon.
``Killer (Jamie Lyon) is doing a good job and I just want to play the best I can.''
In other recruitment news, it is believed the Knights will pay Newcastle prop Josh Perry overs to ensure he does not head to Brookvale Oval.
The Knights are in damage control following Clint Newton's decision to quit. Perry is among the few players the Knights are desperate to retain for 2008.
