Hunt ready for final meeting with Thurston

St George Illawarra Dragons halfback Ben Hunt said the disappointing farewell season that Johnathan Thurston is enduring shouldn't take any of the sheen of his spectacular career.

Hunt, who will line up against the Thurston for the final time when the Dragons tackle the Cowboys at 1300Smiles Stadium on Saturday night, has nothing but admiration for what Thurston has achieved.

But that doesn't mean he isn't determined to add to that pain.

"Sadly for 'JT', 2018 hasn't gone to script. North Queensland won't make the finals, and he won't receive the fitting farewell he deserves," Hunt told this week's edition of Big League magazine.

"It's disappointing for him because he's such a champion of the game, and you want champions to go out on a high. At the same time, everyone knows how great of a player he is and what he's accomplished in his career.

"This season isn't going to have an impact on what people think of him as a player, and it certainly won't define his legacy.

"He's definitely in the top-three guys I've played with or against. He and Cameron Smith have been the best, while it was an amazing experience to say I played alongside Darren Lockyer at the Broncos.

"Sentiment aside, I've got to worry about the Dragons. We can't ignore the fact we've lost two games on the trot."

Hunt and the Dragons suffered a painful 20-16 loss to the Wests Tigers last weekend, a performance the Maroons and Test representative said was partly due to the fatigue and disruption caused by State of Origin football.

"We didn't play our best footy against the Tigers on Sunday, and we've got to fix our season up now. That starts against JT up in Townsville," he said.

"I don't want to use it as an excuse, but you've got to put our recent losses down to Origin.

"We've only had two sessions in the past month-and-a-bit where we've had everyone on deck.

"It changes the way we play games because you can't prepare as well as you should every week, you don't have as many sessions as you should, and as a result, everything hasn't been as crisp as it was earlier in the year."

@dragonssamy61 can you tell which wing Herbert and Periera have been training on?

Dragonslayer
Periera and herbert have done drills and training on both side.
Herbert in Nene stop and periera on the other side.
But wouldn't read to much into it as herbert has run some plays at fb as well.
Imo mary will go with mann.
Hope not hope he goes with herbert as imo he has been going well in isp.
But field also training.
But that is not uncommon.

I was thinking that he may go with Mann on one side and either Herbert or Periera on the other with Nighty back to the bench.

Have you not be paying attention so far?
Mann for Nene, Herbert/ Periera on the bench for 75 minutes, 5 minutes on if we are down by 14 to turn the game around, if he doesn’t it’s back to Reggie’s you go.
If we are up by 14 he doesn’t get a run.

It’s a simple game plan but an ineffective one.

It's worked before so why change a winning formula

Cows game is a defining moment for the season....
It’s a chance to shut up the media and all those predictions of us fading like last season...
Surely that’s enough motivation????
Totally agree
Cowboys at full strength except for Morgan, playing at their home ground.
This is yet another danger game.
Their forwards are no powder puffs and will exacerbate any injuries and fatigue.
Another opportunity to show what we're made of.

They led with that but was Just about Benny hunt learning from past big games

Thanks for the reply gonz , it’s good to know .

Mybe its because they are finally back to a full week of training

Sammy , I didn’t realize that until Tuesday when I read how our SOO boys had only been involved in the ‘ captain ‘ run for the entire series . Here’s hoping that now they are back in their old haunts that the Dragons best footy will return also .

So no frizz and no reason why? Super coach sounded agitated answering.

Rested ? Injured ? Discipline ?

Does super coach bring another back in !

I would say that whatever is with Friz is an unplanned event. Pretty evident in the fact who was named in the 21 this week, there really isn't a back-up and wait before you say Leilua, my guess he was going to be used as per last week, not as an 80 min player otherwise there would be another middle forward named in the squad (unless this is all another attempt at cat and mouse by McGregor and Friz will travel up later)
So, my guess is Leilua to starting edge with Lawrie onto the bench.
The backs still remain somewhat of a mystery even with the revelations above. Does Mann or Nighty now move to the bench as the back-up for Leilua? So it would be out of Field, Herbert and Periera for the wing spot. My guess is Field and Periera will drop out at the 24hr call with Friz still named in the squad. The late mail on Saturday will, for once, become relevant.
