Love this. Why have the Melbourne Storm been such a force since Craig Bellamy took over as coach?
A reader spotted the answer in a piece written by Roy Masters on January 21 this year in this paper, where he told a tale of how Bellamy was able to change an entire culture.
Wrote Masters: "The Storm adopted the most unusual approach to the pre-season, ordering recruits, plus any player who had come straight to the club from school, to work as labourers. Eleven players, including Ryan Hoffman, Antonio Kaufusi and Greg Inglis worked as landscapers, carrying bricks, concreting, digging trenches and laying asphalt. The purpose of the exercise was to show them how good life as a full-time footballer is …
Hoffman's employer spoke in single word sentences: 'Bricks'. 'Concrete'.
When the second-rower asked the boss the time for morning tea, he used two words: 'Ten minutes.' The players weren't paid: their wages went to charity.
As Bellamy says: 'They learnt what it's like to work your arse off for $500 a week …"'
Bravo! And can someone please give that man a cigar?
