Crazy idea

I’ll be honest from the jump and say that I can’t stand state of origin simply because it’s grown too big and has eclipsed international RL. It’s become a behemoth if you will that’s only getting bigger all the time. so what would Aussies on here think about a kind of 5 states/nations competition similar to the old 5nations rugby union championship in the northern hemisphere??? Each state/nation plays each other once in a round robin format with the team finishing 1st crowned the winners. And before the smart arses start I know and I’m not claiming that Queensland and NSW are nations.

You could have the following states&nations competing :-

Queensland
NSW
New Zealand
Tonga
PNG

This is repeatedly, the worst idea ever floated in Rugby League.
Ok. How about replacing Queensland and NSW with Australia and Fiji?? You could have :-

Australia
New Zealand
PNG
Fiji
Tonga

And instead of state of origin being a 3 match series every year it could be just 1 single annual match.

As silly as when people repeatedly say Australia should be broken up into NSW and QLD in the World Cup.

I wouldn't be surprised if Origin has peaked. If we can get more countries to the level of support that Tonga and PNG had last year, there's nothing Origin can really do to match it. Origin will likely still be the highest quality and will always get big crowds and ratings, but I've never seen anything like the Tongan games last year. Of course, we actually have to attempt to capitalise on it first.

I honestly believe that the Aussie RL fans have fallen out of love with international RL and the recent World Cup just proves that with the abysmal attendances in Australia.

State of origin is the be all and end all for fans and media.

i think (and hope) that origin has jumped the shark.

For many years now its been more a victory of hype over substance, with it being rammed down peoples throats about how good it is.

I think SOO has peaked. I guess we will see over the next few years.

The idea in the OP ? No thanks.
