Pat Howard to leave Cricket Australia in 2019

Cricket Australia high-performance chief Pat Howard will leave next year

Pat Howard, one of the most powerful and polarising figures at Cricket Australia, will depart his post after the 2019 Ashes.

Howard was appointed manager of team performance in 2011.

The creation of his senior role, which involves a diverse range of responsibilities that has included the hiring and firing of senior coaches, was one of the key recommendations of the Argus review.

Howard, who has played a leading role in most of Australian cricket’s highs and lows during a turbulent period, will not seek a new contract when his current deal expires next year.

Howard was dispatched to South Africa earlier this year to conduct a formal investigation into the ball-tampering saga alongside head of integrity Ian Roy.

Many pundits have questioned the role Howard played in fostering a win-at-all- costs mentality, one of many subjects set to be covered in the independent cultural review that will be released on Monday.

“The decision is his own and is no way connected to the reviews to be released on Monday,” a CA spokesperson said.

“A recruitment process will be decided and announced in due course, but there is plenty of time for this to be considered.”

The fact that Howard has been entrusted to manage Steve Smith and David Warner’s likely return plus Australia’s World Cup and Ashes defence in England suggests he has not been pushed by CA.

Many former cricketers were outraged by Howard’s appointment, which came after 20 rugby Tests for the Wallabies and a stint as high-performance manager at Australian Rugby Union (ARU).

Howard has continued to cop plenty of criticism during a turbulent period for Australian cricket, most recently for flagging 30-plus scores as a selection metric.

But Howard has also won plenty of supporters at CA, having served as somewhat of a conduit between the board and team while spearheading several reforms at first-class and junior level.

“We see his ongoing contribution as integral to our future plans,” CA chief executive James Sutherland said after Howard’s previous contract renewal in 2017.

lol, well I wasn't trolling

I seriously dont know what this guy does

what pissed me off about this guy is when Smith, Warner and Bancroft got busted, the first thing we did was put Howard on a plane to Seth Efrica, if he is high performance manager and we are playing a test series overseas, why wasn't he already over there ?

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/finch-named-odi-captain-marsh-lyon-out-20181027-p50cbd.html

Aaron Finch will spearhead Australia's World Cup defence after being confirmed as the new ODI captain, replacing Tim Paine ahead of next month's series against South Africa with Alex Carey and Josh Hazlewood to serve as his deputies.

Finch leads a 14-man squad for the series starting in Perth on November 4 which has been bolstered by the inclusion of star pacemen Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc and the return of batting powerhouse Chris Lynn.

Shaun Marsh's twin centuries in England proved enough to save his spot despite a dire Test series in the UAE, while Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head have also been backed to bolster their case for Test selection with white-ball runs.

Test vice-captain Mitch Marsh and offspinner Nathan Lyon are notable omissions along with white-ball specialist Andrew Tye - the latter squeezed out by an excess of fast bowling options which also include Nathan Coulter-Nile.

"We have made the decision to manage Mitch Marsh and Nathan Lyon carefully to ensure they are in the best condition possible to put their hand up for selection either later in the summer or the World Cup next year," chief selector Trevor Hohns said.

"No doubt with a big summer program ahead, opportunities may well present themselves for Andrew, Mitch and Nathan, as well as others not included in this squad."

Already national T20 captain, Finch has effectively been given full responsibility for Australia in white-ball cricket in a major endorsement of the Victorian's leadership.

He is poised to play across all three formats this summer after making a successful Test debut in the UAE.

"We expect as Aaron, Josh and Alex lead the side through a big Australian summer ... they'll also be driving our standards and values as we prepare for our defence of the World Cup which is only seven months away," Hohns said.

"We believe the squad we have selected will give us a great opportunity to not only be competitive at home this summer, but it also allows us to start to build continuity leading into next year's tournament."

Paine had only ever been considered a temporary ODI captain, and his widely- expected axing comes after he oversaw a 5-0 whitewash defeat in England earlier this year.

Hohns said the decision to hand the wicketkeeping gloves to Carey on a full-time basis would allow Paine to focus on the Test captaincy ahead of next year's Ashes.

Carey kept on debut in Brisbane last summer but was relegated behind Paine in his other two ODI appearances in England.

Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa have been picked as the two spin options while D'Arcy Short and Marcus Stoinis are among other batsmen set to take on an imposing South African pace attack led by Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn and Lungi Ngidi.

Coach Justin Langer has indicated runs in the 50-over format will be valued when it comes to selecting players for the first Test against India in Adelaide.

AUSTRALIA SQUAD: Aaron Finch (capt), Shaun Marsh, Travis Head, Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell, D'Arcy Short, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey (vice-capt), Ashton Agar, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood (vice-capt), Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa.

lol

does anyone know what this guy actually does besides polarise ?

I do remember him being a speed bump for Vaiaga Tuigamala. A bomb went up, he looked like a startled deer, dropped it cold as Tuigamala advanced and it was try time. The win at all costs theory never really was the case for him as a footballer.

Jesus, so they gave Paine one series at the helm and then dumped him? For Carey, who still is largely unproven?

It’s going to be a great summer.

Classic CA. Carey isn't even a young gun. Don't get me wrong, I think he has potential, but at 27 he's not exactly a young tyro with a decade on front of him...

And what does Jake Weatherald need to do to get a run? We look more and more like 1990s NZ with all these half arsed "all rounders". Hell, even Joe Burns or Calum Ferguson as an option instead of six guys who bat a bit sometimes and bowl a bit others

I’m glad we’re only playing six ODIs this summer. We don’t stand a chance in any of them.

I don't think the first bit it red would worry Warner. But I think the 2nd bit would have cut him up.
He was close to Phil Hughes. If true, using Phil Hughes death (may be RIP) is poor form

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...-sledged-Phil-Hughes-brother-grade-match.html

Disgraced cricketer David Warner bizarrely pulled himself from the field during a grade cricket match after being sledged by an opponent.

Warner has been playing Sydney grade cricket for Randwick Petersham and was facing the brother of Phil Hughes, his close friend who died on the field in a game in 2014.

Jason Hughes reportedly called the former Australian vice-captain a 'disgrace' and 'weak' during Saturday's game, prompting Warner to take himself from the field while still on 35 runs not out.

After some words from his teammates Warner did re-enter the game, with his opponents allowing him to resume his innings despite it being against the rules.

A witness claimed they heard Phil Hughes' death being mentioned in a sledge, which seemed to push Warner over the edge.

Lol Warner having a sook about sledging and his bimbo wife having a bit to say as usual.

And fancy re writing the rules just for your almighty self.

This bloke is a cancerous tumour and should be stamped "never to play for Australia" again just like KP was for England.
