Following the conservative notion of "user pays" and them not being keen on welfare of any kind, @Delboy what do you think about the family home being included as part of the pension asset test ? Should you be forced to sell down and spend your assets before you get a pension ?

Of course the current proposal is only for those who have been granted access to their super to support a first home purchase. However in 50 years time, that could end up to be almost everyone.

Is this a scheme to help first home buyers or are they playing a long game to eradicate the aged pension.

As symbolism goes it's a pretty fair narrative that Trump is opposed by people willing to hurt America if it means hurting Trump.

I wonder how much support he'll get at the next election.

2020 is for Trump to lose. Interestingly he is already painting a picture that a vote for the democrats is a vote for "the squad" --> Sassy women of colour.

"The Squad" --> Identity politics trash with extremely poor favourability ratings in swing states (as per internal Dem polling released by Axios).

There's a reason Trump is pushing The Squad to the front and forcing Pelosi to align herself with them.

Of course. Cletus won’t like being lead by strong women of colour.

Politicians aren't leaders, they are representatives. And Cletus doesn't feel represented by politicians who despise him.

The squad doesn’t despise Cletus and his inbred kin. Without the left he wouldn’t have any welfare FFS.

He doesn't want welfare, he wants the jobs that have gone to China. Welfare is shameful to big state sceptics.

And buying votes with welfare doesn't mean you respect those voters.

Cletus is pretty much f**ked then,

The only ones who'd represent him with any kinda honesty are the far left and the extreme right.

Aaaaand...that's why the left keep losing, folks.

Fun fact: the Progressives of this world ALWAYS effect the change that they argue for. Unfortunately it’s the Conservatives that are the political speed humps of this world and cowardly defer, procrastinate and filibuster. History shows that change will happen whether you like it or not.

Making sure change doesn't happen too quickly reduces society's exposure to unintended consequences. You're welcome.

Social science isn't real science. And obviously a rich lawyer like yourself doesn't need to care about unintended consequences. You'll benefit from most of them.

Do you want to go first or me ?

My list - Great risk takers in history.

Your list - Conservative mummy’s boys who were too scared to leave their room because of upload_2019-7-28_16-50-36.gif unintentional consequences upload_2019-7-28_16-50-51.gif.

Your emotive and biased descriptions ignore the way that risk and reward are distributed throughout society.

The rewards used to be reaped overwhelmingly by the risk-takers, whereas we now have systems where rent is easy to seek while risk can mostly be offloaded to people without any choice in the matter.

Hands up if you've benefitted from the economic events of 2008. Plenty of merkins are still shattered from it.

Nice try. The context was progressivism vs conservatism. Social reform vs staunch traditional values.

Your attempt to make this personal is petty and ironic considering that the conservatives in true form are content with human imperfections dictating fate.

I am conservative and I'm hardly staunch about anything, especially traditional values. But I have seen how those values have kept people safe and prosperous in the face of chaos. There's a lot of value there and throwing it out in favour of radical change has caused the anomic horror show building in the 'developed' world today. We already have a blueprint for dealing with human nature. It needs constant tweaking, but discarding it wholesale has never ended well for the most vulnerable.
